Obituary for Margaret “Peggy” Farrar On September, Peggy lost her fight with the ravages of ALS. On that day, her husband Bill lost not only his wife of almost 50 years but also the love of his life, his partner, and his best friend. All who knew her loved her for what she was, a loving, caring person, mother and spouse.
Her caring outlook on the lives of others was further reflected in her dedication to her nursing career and in those with whom she participated in their health care. She was always laughing and happy, particularly when she was in the company of family and friends. Over the years she and Bill visited some 20 of the Caribbean islands and she fell in love with the island life and the people who lived there.
Her loving personality was reflected in the great relationships she developed with the island natives. When she and her sister-in–law retired, they spent two months on Roatan. She was born to Harold and Barbara Cook on August 25, 1946 in Dover, New Jersey, four years after the birth of her sister, Janet.
In her formative years she attended Stonewall Jackson, J. L. Long, and Woodrow Wilson high school. Peggy’s ambition was always to become a nurse and aid those with a caring and gentle nature. In 1965 she completed her studies for LVN and achieved her goal.
She became involved in the care of geriatric patients and was later employed as an office nurse at Samuel Clinic, gaining additional experience dealing with a broad range of patients and illnesses. She still looked forward to obtaining her RN sometime in the future In June of 1968, she met Bill Farrar on a blind date and following a short, long distance courtship, moved to California and married him on September 13, 1968. While in California, Peggy and Bill continued their education.
Their recreation times were spent at the beach, snow skiing, and deepening their relationship. In 1971, Bill completed his studies and a month later, an earthquake caused the couple to return to Texas. After finding jobs in Dallas, to the delight of the two, Peg was found to be pregnant.
William T. “Chip” was born on January 31, 1974. The famly ultimately moved to Fort Worth in 1975 where Biill assumed a new position and they remained there until 1979 when the family opened a vending business in Tyler. During and in midst of this transition, Peggy continued part time work at Mother Frances Hospital where she was employed as a nurse in the ob-gyn department, principally in neonatal care.
Though continuing as an LVN, she never lost her wish to continue her education and attain her RN. In 1989, she entered the transition program at TJC and two years later completed her studies and attained lifetime fulfillment of becoming an RN. The couple’s son married Melynda McCullough when he was in his early 20s and their son, Taylor was born on April 27, 1994, to the delight of his parents and family.
Peggy became a medical case manager and continued in that role for the next 23 years. She was extremely successful in this position and was looked upon as a leader in her field. Peggy and Bill enjoyed their retired life but in June of 2017, Peggy began to experience physical difficulties and was evaluated She was evaluated by the Neurological Institute in Houston who confirmed an ALS diagnosis.
Her condition began to deteriorate and on the 3rd of this month, her body could no longer resist the effects of the disease. She died peacefully in her home overlooking the lake and attended by her husband at her bedside. She is survived by her husband, son, grandson, sister, nieces, nephnews, and grand nieces, her sister-in law, and brother-in-law.
