Obituary for Betty Lou (Burton) Towers Betty Lou Burton Towers was born to Hilda and Marion Burton in Marietta, OK March 16, 1924. She was the eldest of four children. Betty attended Oklahoma College for Women in Chickasha, OK for one semester until just after Pearl Harbor.
She married Howard Towers in Bryan, TX on September 17, 1944. After the war ended they moved to California. They had two children.
A daughter, Carol Ann, was born in 1946 in San Francisco and a son, John Howard was born in 1948, in Bakersfield, CA. In 1956 they moved to Tyler, TX raising their children there. In Tyler, she was active in the First Presbyterian Church teaching elementary Sunday School, served as superintendent of the Primary Department and singing in the choir.
Betty Lou and Howard moved to Hideaway Lake in 1969. She started and led a lady’s exercise class, taught a girl’s dance class one year, started and choreographed the Lakettes. She was an active member in the Three Lakes Garden Club, the Book Club, Variety Club, Christian Women’s Club, HAWL Bible Study, and was a charter member of the Ballroom Dance Club.
Betty started the Short and Sassy Club, participated in a Bingo group, two mahjong groups. She and Howard delivered for Meals on Wheels and were active members of the First United Methodist Church in Lindale. Betty Lou returned to Tyler Junior College in the 70’s for several years.
Then opened “The Nook and Cranny” a consignment store for local artists, craftsman and antiques. This retail outlet was pure joy for her. Betty Lou was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers (Bill and Gene), Bill’s wife Doris and her beloved husband of seventy-one years, Howard.
Surviving family members include: her daughter, Carol, and husband Stanford Sewell of Plano, TX; her son, John, and wife Kristie Towers of Plano, TX; sister, Marillyn Seeberger and husband, Gus of Dallas. Sister-in-law, Jamie Burton of Nashville, TN and sister-in-law, Peggy Beatty of Monticello, IN. Betty Lou leaves three grandchildren and their spouses, two step-grandchildren and their spouses; ten great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
Memorial Service will be Saturday, October 27th at 11:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church – 402 W. Hubbard Street, Lindale, TX 75771 The family has requested memorial contributions be sent to Generation to generation [G2g.
