Obituary of Margaret Hill Margaret Sumner Hill, 88, of Pocomoke City, died Saturday, April 14, 2018 surrounded by her loving family at Berlin Nursing home. Born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 13, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Floyd Sumner, Sr. and Vera Martinez. She graduated from Granby High School in Norfolk, Virginia and soon married the love of her life, the late Forrest (Jack) Hill.

She happily raised seven children and became an active volunteer in a wide assortment of community activities. At the age of 55, she returned to school and realized a lifelong dream of becoming a nurse. For over twenty years, she worked as an emergency room and operating nurse at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, loved every minute of her career and was named “Employee of the Year” in 1983.

When she reluctantly retired from the hospital in her mid-70‘s due to health concerns, she continued her love of nursing through educational opportunities. In addition to her volunteer work for 9 years, totaling over 4000 hours of service, at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and her nursing career there, Margaret was the Public Relations Representative for the hospital’s Board of Directors; a member, board member and past chairwoman of the Worcester County Chapter of the American Red Cross; a charter member and past president of the Hartley Hall Auxiliary; a board member of the Pocomoke Maple Shade, a member of the Board of Directors for the Pocomoke Health Care Center; a 30 year Girl Scout troop leader, consultant and board member; a volunteer swimming instructor for the Pocomoke Middle School; founding member, Eucharistic Minister, and council member of the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church; a member of the Virginia Child Abuse Prevention Task Force; a CPR and First Aid instructor for the American Heart Association as well as the American Red Cross; a member of the “Save the Youth” governing board; Odyssey of the Mind judge; past board member of the Pocomoke Samaritan House shelter. In addition to her many community activities Margaret was honored with the Kiwanis’ “Good Neighbor of the Year” in 1979, the “Women Helping Women” award in 1975, and received the Worcester County recognition award of the “Most Beautiful People’ in 1989.

In addition to her parents and husband, Margaret was predeceased by her sister, Ellen Vecchietti, and her brothers Floyd Sumner, Jr. and John Martinez. Margaret was a devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and nothing gave her greater joy than spending time with her family. She is survived, to honor her memory, by her seven children, Robin Joseph (Stuart) and Melody Gillespie (Roland) of Pocomoke, John Hill (Tamara) of Delmar, Candy Baer (Steve) of Ocean City, Lance Hill (Janie) of Owensboro, KY, Chris Hill (Vanessa) of Salisbury and Kelly Bulin (Joe) of Onancock, VA.

In addition, she is survived by her 14 grandchildren, Ryan, Killian, Shannon, Jennifer, Taylor, Connor, Kody, Kolby, Katie, Michael, Sarah, Brooke, Tyler, and Jon-Christopher and her 7 great-grandchildren, Eliana, Stella, Skylar, Logan, Addison, Amelia and Gavin. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, April 18, 2018 at the Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, Market Street, Pocomoke City, MD at 11:00 AM, where family and friends will gather one hour prior to the service.

Rev. Raymond Weisman will officiate. Interment will follow in the First Baptist Church Cemetery in Pocomoke City.
