A lifelong resident of Nedrow and South Onondaga, she was best known for her wit, sense of humor, love of reading and lifelong interest in current affairs. Her greatest gift, however, was her ability to give people her complete attention and make them feel special.

The world was a better place for having had her in it. The daughter of Marie D. and Thomas Patrick Knox, her Irish heritage was worn as a badge of eternal pride. She was often heard saying, “One hundred percent Irish, 100% of the time…” She attended Rockwell School and Onondaga Valley Academy, and went on to attend Syracuse University and Cortland State, where she earned a B.S. in Recreation Education.

She was proud to say she was one of the first graduates of this brand-new program. She accepted a teaching position in Great Neck , Long Island in 1956. Marie married Peter Barnes Miller in 1957, then returned to Syracuse in 1962.

Moving to South Onondaga in 1963, she and Pete raised their family of six there and became active members in the community, including various educational committees. In 1971 she joined the Onondaga Central Schools faculty, where she taught 7th grade English, but was best known for being the substitute of choice for any classroom or subject. During this time she earned a Masters Degree in Education.

It was her love of students that became her most profound legacy. After retirement, she and Pete did extensive travelling throughout Europe and South America. As a proud mother of six and grandmother of twelve, she imparted a love of learning that remains intact.

Marie was predeceased by her beloved husband of 49 years, Peter, and grandsons Graham and Jesse. She is survived by her six children; Mary (Michael) Schechter, Sarah “Sally” Miller, Julia (David) Peterson, Thom (Lisa) Miller, Tim (Tess) Miller, John (Janice) Miller; her wonderful grandchildren Spenser, David, Olivia, Caleb, Savannah, Wade, Paige, Bethany, Riley and Ethan.
