MARK STEPHEN COOPER, M.D. 1955 –2018 PITTSTON – Mark S. Cooper, M.D. of Pittston passed away April 28, 2018 at home after a long battle with cancer surrounded by his family. He was born on February 26, 1955 in Somerville, MA to Douglas and Evelyn (Avadesian) Cooper. He attended Gardiner area schools, the University of Vermont, and graduated from the University of Vermont, College of Medicine in 1981.

After graduation from medical school, he did his internship and residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. Following residency training, he returned home to central Maine and established his solo practice in Augusta. This practice would eventually grow into Kennebec Valley Obstetrics &Gynecology.

Dr. Cooper practiced Obstetrics & Gynecology in Augusta for more than 25 years, delivering over 3,500 babies over his career. He retired from his practice in 2010 to work for the State of Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine as the Medical Director. During his time at MaineGeneral Medical Center in Augusta, Dr. Cooper served as Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and & Gynecology several times, the Chief of Staff and the President of the Medical Staff, and served on the Board of Directors.

He was a Consultant in the Department of Surgery at the Veterans Administration at Togus providing gynecologic care and surgery for women veterans for 10 years. He was a member of the Board of Directors for Medical Mutual Insurance Company of Maine for 13 years. He was the Treasurer of the company for the last several years of his term.

Dr. Cooper was also active in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology having served on a national committee, Secretary/Treasurer, Vice-Chairman and Chairman of the Maine Section, Secretary and Treasurer of District I, and was the General Chairman for two District I educational meetings. In 2012, he received the Outstanding District Service Award. He was a member of the Maine Medical Association and served on its Executive Committee.

He, with his wife Amy, was a volunteer driver for Avian Haven Bird Rescue and a volunteer with the Meals on Wheels program through Senior Spectrum in Hallowell delivering meals weekly. He enjoyed golf, skiing, boating, and trips with his family, partners and office staff. He obtained his private pilot license.

He especially enjoyed fly fishing and fished throughout Maine, the West and Canada. Dr. Cooper coached Little League a number of years for the Hall-Dale league including an All-Star team and a softball team in Gardiner for 5 and 6 year olds. He was a member of the Sugarloaf Ski Patrol from 1992 to 1999.

Dr. Cooper was predeceased by his mother Evelyn A. Cooper, brother Jeffrey J. Cooper and nephew Douglas P. Cooper. He is survived by his loving wife and partner in life Amy C. Cooper, father Douglas C. Cooper, DMD and his wife Mary Ellen of Vero Beach, FL, sister-in-law Susanne Cooper of Nashville, TN, sons Andrew S. Cooper and his wife Tawny of Philadelphia, PA, Eric C. Cooper of Randolph, daughter Gabrielle E. Cooper of Pittston, and grandson Conrad Cooper of Pittston There is no memorial service planned at this time. Mark has requested donations be made to one of his two passions: Avian Haven, c/o Diane Winn & Marc Payne, 418 North Palermo Rd Freedom, Me 04941 and Spectrum Generations Meals On Wheels, c/o Lynda Johnson, 22 Town Farm Road, Hallowell, ME.
