Obituary for Mary L. Cory Mary L. Cory, born in Taunton, May 19, 1918, died on Thursday, October 25, 2018, at the age of 100, from complications of Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Taunton, she lived first in the city’s Westville section, and then in Dighton since 1941. Her last seven years were spent in Taunton at the Arbors, where she died while under hospice care.

She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Anna (daSilveira) Perry, who emigrated from the island of Faial, Azores, near the turn of the century. She was the wife of the late Joseph L. Cory, who died in 1989. Mary was a communicant of the former St. Peter’s paris in Dighton, and was a graduate of Taunton High School.

She worked at Mount Hope Finishing in North Dighton, Swank in Taunton, and as a housekeeper in the Taunton area. However, she found most of her enjoyment, and a of her long life and good health, helping her parents for many years on the family farm in Dighton and at her own home, and in years of dedicated care for beloved family members. In her youth she worked in Dighton’s strawberry fields with her older cousin, Louise Alvernaz, from whom she received her middle name.

Mary lived many decades in the home her husband built on County Street, in Dighton, where she helped raise three brothers, adopted son Jesse DeArruda of Wisconsin, adopted son the late Ronald DeArruda, who died in 2010, and foster son the late Richard DeArruda, who passed away on October 25, 38 years ago. After the death of her father in the 1980s, she cared for her brother Antone, who died Thanksgiving Day, 2008, at the age of 86. Besides her son Jesse, she is survived by her adopted brother, Robert DeArruda of Sandwich, and her nephew James DeArruda of Dighton.

Her final years were under the gentle care of the Arbors staff, Compassionate Care Hospice, and Home Instead Senior Care. Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Friday, November 2, 2018, at 11am, in the Crapo-Hathaway Funeral Home, 350 Somerset Ave. , Taunton.

Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton. In lieu of flowers, tax deductible donations may be made to Alzheimer’s National Headquarters, 225 N. Michigan Ave. , Fl.
