Obituary for Mrs. Mina Jean Vance Hilewitz Mina Jean (Vance) Hilewitz, passed away at home, surrounded by her family and friends, in Anniston, AL on June 23, 2018. She lived 90 glorious years and previously resided in Tonganoxie, KS; Ozawkie, KS; and Killeen, TX. She was born in Kansas City, Kansas on December 19, 1927 to Dolly Mae (Huffman) and Edward Vance and married Harry J. Hilewitz, in Bonner Springs, Kansas on September 14, 1957.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her brother, Jack Edward Vance and a granddaughter, Alexis Ann Hilewitz. She is survived by her other brother Duane E. Vance of North Stonington, CT; her children: Gregory (Rosemary) of Hillsboro, TX; Jeffrey of Anniston, AL; and Robin Hilewitz of Grand Prairie, TX; a step-son, Harry (Joan) Hilewitz of Pittsburg, PA, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She graduated from Tonganoxie (KS) High School, attended the University of Kansas, and enlisted in the U.S. Women’s Army Corps (WAC) where she served over 10 years.

After her military service she worked for and retired from the Federal Government with the most notable assignments at the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, KS and the Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka, KS. She was an active member of the Gold Star Wives of America, McClellan Chapter and the Women’s Army Corps Veterans Association Army Women United Chapter 62 in Anniston, AL. A mass will be held at St. Charles Catholic Church in Jacksonville, AL on June 26, 2018 at 10:00 am.

Interment will be at the National Cemetery in Leavenworth where she will be laid to rest next to her late husband. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations to the Gold Star Wives of America (www. goldstarwives.org).
