Nancy Ann Gillis, 84, residing in Granger, passed away at 10:15pm on Monday, May 28, 2018 in her home. She was born August 28, 1933 in South Bend to the late Reid and Gladys (Foley) Coble. On February 11, 1956 in Bedford, IN, Nancy married Pete Gillis, Jr., who survives.
In addition to her loving husband of 62 years, she is survived by her six children, all of Granger: daughters, Kathy (Mark) Mossey and their children, Chris, Eric and Alex; Karen (Mike) Nidiffer and their children, Michael, Anna, Matthew, Luke and Jacob; sons, Pete (Cindy) Gillis III and their children, Angela (Zac), Maria (Brandon), Pete IV (Jenna), Christina, Katie, Maggie and Joey; Greg (Chelby) Gillis and their children, Greg Jr., Alli (Quinn Shannon), Denton, Chloe and Isabella; Brian Gillis and his children, Gabrielle and Lauren; and Tom (Renee) Gillis and their children, Grant, Grace, Ava and Reid; and four great-grandchildren, Dylan, Declan, James and Jude. She is also survived by one brother, Tom (Barbara) Coble of Indianapolis, IN, as well as many nieces and nephews. Nancy graduated from Indiana University Bloomington and was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority.
It was at I.U. that she met Pete, the love of her life. They lived for a short time in Rhode Island before settling in South Bend. Nancy received her master’s degree and worked as a teacher at Marian High School and throughout the South Bend Community School Corporation.
She was also an accomplished realtor. Nancy had been president of the women’s metro golf tour and both Knollwood and Erskine women’s golf leagues, and let’s not forget her hole in one. Nancy was also a Daughter of the American Revolution.
Her passions were traveling throughout Europe, art, theatre, and genealogy. She was a fantastic artist and played many lead roles with the South Bend Civic Theatre. Nancy had many loves but nothing more important than her devotion to the Virgin Mary and her family.
She was a longtime member of St. Anthony de Padua Catholic Church in South Bend. Mass of Christian Burial for Nancy will be celebrated at 11:30am on Friday, June 1, 2018 in St. Pius X Catholic Church, 52553 Fir Road, Granger. Graveside services and entombment will follow in St. Joseph Valley Memorial Park, Granger.
Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 – 8:00pm on Thursday, May 31, 2018 in the Palmer Funeral Home—Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, as well as one hour prior to mass on Friday in the church. Rosary will be recited at 4:00pm on Thursday at the funeral home, and visitation will conclude with family sharing beginning at 7:30pm.
