Obituary for Nathan Squires Nathan S. Squires July 14, 1927 – June 29, 2018 Nathan S. Squires of East Wenatchee was peacefully called home, surrounded by family, on June 29th 2018. Nathan was born in Tumwater, Washington, on July 14, 1927, to Charles and Helen (McCay) Squires. He was the youngest of three boys growing up during the Great Depression.
Nathan grew up in different places as a child including Washington, Arkansas and Nebraska. When Nathan was young he enjoyed working on the farm with his brothers and keeping everyone entertained. Nathan met the love of his life, Rose Towles, in Wichita, Kansas.
They were married in Oklahoma on October 25, 1965. Together they raised three children, Denise Mitchell of Wichita, KS, Gayla Smith of North Platte, NE and Nathan (Jackie) Squires of East Wenatchee. Nathan had six grandchildren that he was very proud of: Denise’s daughter, Tylena, Gayla’s children Amanda, Raymond and Andrew and Nate and Jackie’s children CJ and Bethany.
Nathan was enlisted in the Army Air Corp during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He was a carpenter. After his honorable discharge, he returned home from Korea and started a career in construction, specializing in siding application in Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma.
When he turned 51 he decided to return to Peshastin, where he had picked apples as a kid and enjoyed the great outdoors. He was employed in the fruit industry for the next 34 years, making many friends and his greatest joy was making everyone around him laugh! He never met a stranger.
Many holidays were spent with “friends” that Nathan made on his way home from work that had no place to go. His love and compassion for others in need was inspiring. He and Rose loved to go camping and fishing at the Mar Don Resort on the Potholes Reservoir.
Many summer days were spent there enjoying fishing on the dock and relaxing with friends at the Resort. (Many thanks go out to the Meseberg family and the Mardon residents for treating Nate and Rose special and doing extra things for them to make sure they were comfortable. ) Nathan also enjoyed hunting when he could.
His love of the outdoors was important to him. He was always at peace when he was outside. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Kadie Glen Assisted Living and to the staff at Colonial Vista for making Nathan comfortable.
Their kindness was greatly appreciated. Nathan is survived by his three children, six grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose, and his brothers: Henry Squires and Ralph Squires.
Visitation will be held on Friday, July 6, 2018, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Heritage Memorial Chapel, located at 19 Rock Island Road, in East Wenatchee, WA. A Funeral Service of Commemoration to celebrate the life of Nathan Squires will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at Heritage Memorial Chapel, East Wenatchee. A private family burial will be held at 10:30 am on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at the Tahoma National Military Cemetery in Kent, WA.
