Pastor Berkley “Dean”‘s Obituary CHILHOWIE, VA Pastor Berkley “Dean” Smith age 71 went home to be with his Lord on Sunday February 17, 2019 at his home in Chilhowie, VA. Dean was born in Smyth County on March 17, 1947 to the late Glenn & Mabel Campbell Smith. He is also preceded in death by his sister Jewell Arrington, and infant brother Roy Smith.

Dean served as local Pastor at the Heavenly Hope Baptist Church in Chilhowie. He also was Chaplin at the Southwest Regional Jail and on the ministry board at Valley Health Care Nursing Home. He served as Scout Master, and earned his Eagle Scout award.

Dean coached Little League baseball and football for many years. He is survived by his loving wife Frances Smith; daughter and her husband whom he considered as a son Tammy Sayers & husband Freddie; two sons Tim & Darrell Smith; special sister-in-law JoAnn Allison; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and other loving family and church family & friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00PM on Wednesday February 20, 2019 at the Heavenly Hope Baptist Church in Chilhowie with Rick Munk, Rick Elmore, & Pastor Tim Norris officiating.

Interment will follow in the Old Glade Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00-8:00PM on Tuesday evening at the church, and also one hour prior to the funeral service on Wednesday. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.
