Obituary for Patrick Lloyd Stallcup OGDEN – Patrick Lloyd Stallcup, Ph.D., died at home on December 31, 2018, due to a variety of health issues. He was 80. A native of Oakland, Alameda County, California, Pat was born on April 12, 1938.

He graduated with a bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State University and with a masters and a doctorate degree from Colorado State University. His fields of study were biology, zoology, and ornithology. He married Sandy Thompson in 1959.

They had two children, James Patrick and Lisa, and later divorced. Pat married Dodie Truman Stallcup, a friend from high school, in 2007. Pat taught for a number of years at Lewis and Clark College, a private liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon.

He had a great love for wildlife and was widely recognized for his expertise in ornithology. He often took students on study trips to Central and South America and to Hawaii. In the mid-1990’s, Pat retired to Hawaii and built a home of lava rock and scrap wood and metal near South Point on the Big Island.

He taught part-time at the University of Hawaii and loved exploring the island in the years he lived there. Pat enjoyed his 11 years in Utah, particularly the mountains and national parks. He and Dodie often traveled to bird refuges and other locales where Pat could be close to nature.

He was a member of Kingston Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a late-in-life convert to the Church. One of Pat’s favorite pastimes was floating the Deschutes River, a tributary of the Columbia River in Central Oregon, with his son and grandsons, Tristan and Zane. A few weeks before Pat died, Jim came to Utah and took him on a daylong bison- and bird-watching trip to Antelope Island, his last outing.

Pat was preceded in death by his mother, Lois Lee Endsley Goebel; his father, Albert Lloyd Stallcup; his stepfather, Herman H. Goebel; his sister, Rae Moses, brother-in-law, Leon Moses; and Annie, his beloved border collie.
