Andrew “Andy” Scott Dickson (63) of Ogden, Utah passed away on February 13, 2019 from natural causes. He was born on Father’s Day at the Dee Memorial Hospital in Ogden, Utah on June 19, 1955 to J Burton and Helen Elaine James Dickson. Andy was the 5th of 11 children.
Andy attended Lorin Farr Elementary, Central Junior High where he loved playing football, and graduated from Ogden Seminary and Ogden High School Class of 1974. While growing up, Andy belonged to the Ogden 13th Ward. He loved participating in church activities, roadshows, and sports.
Andy served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Portland, Oregon from 1978-1980. Some of his callings included Elders Quorum Secretary and Primary Teacher in the church. As a child, Andy was a loving, helpful, kind person with a strong work ethic that came easily to him.
At a young age, he pulled a wagon around the neighborhood collecting old newspapers to recycle for two cents a pound. Andy loved catching pollywogs and frogs with his brothers and loved his dog, Blackie. Andy’s hard work ethic continued as he delivered newspapers for the Ogden Standard Examiner.
Eventually, he distributed bundles of newspapers to those who delivered as well as to newspaper stands with his friend Richard Baggs. As a youth, Andy worked at Spudnut Donuts, Pizza Hut, and the Ogden Rodeo and the Ogden 24th of July Parade selling concessions. At a young age, he was a hod carrier and eventually became a brick mason.
When working for 7Up/Dr Pepper, Andy was so proud to win a TV for his family. Being a man of many trades, Andy also worked for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lindquist Mortuary, and retired from Utility Trailer. He began a recycling business and loved owning his own yard care/snow removal service, Andy’s Yard Care, which was inspired by mowing his Grandma James lawn as a child.
Andy married Anita Tucker in the Ogden, Utah Temple on June 26, 1981. He became a proud father when he adopted David, Candice, and Bridgette. He was blessed with two more sons, Scott and Adam.
Andy and Anita divorced. Andy married and divorced Valerie Sims and later Dianne Rutherford. Wherever Andy went, he seemed to know everyone.
If he forgot their name he’d still have the courage to greet them, apologize for forgetting their name, and remind them of how he knew them. He left an indelible impression on those with whom he interacted. Andy deeply loved friends and family and had a generous heart of gold.
He was kind, compassionate, and had a humble spirit with a Christlike empathy for all. He was willing to give more than he had and would share his last dollar if he saw a need. Words that his children and grandchildren use to describe him are: Fun, Outgoing, Different, Life of the Party, Kind, Firecracker, Popcorn, Crazy, Liked the Spotlight.
Besides family, some things Andy loved were Dr Pepper, hunting, fishing, animals- especially dogs, watching Old Westerns- Gunsmoke, Rifleman, and any John Wayne movie and playing Scrabble. He loved to take people for rides on his 4-wheeler and riding lawn mower. Andy was known for his teasing and telling the alphabet joke.
As a young boy, he liked to go to his grandparents’ farm in Morgan and as an adult, he helped maintain the property. Andy is survived by his children; Candice (Joe) Widdison, Bridgette Buck, Scott (Elena) Dickson, Adam Dickson, and his twelve grandchildren; Martika Vigil, Jaren Howes, Jayce Howes, Kinley Howes, Jaiden Howes, Braxton Buck , Mason Buck, Eseta Dickson, En-Hakkore (Kori) Dickson, Manase Dickson, Monson Dickson, Ellenora Dickson and two great-granddaughters; Khloe and Hailey. Andy is also survived by his mother Helen Elaine James Dickson and his siblings; Kathleen (Lou) Best, Irene (Bill) Workman, Douglas (Tym) Dickson, Nathan (Robyn) Dickson, Karen (Milton) Witt, Maureen (Mark) Crump, George (Stephanie) Dickson, John (Jenny) Dickson, and Sharon (Craig) Dahl.
He was preceded in death by his son, David Eastman Dickson; his father, J Burton Dickson; and his brother, David Forde Dickson. A viewing will be held on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Liberty Park Ward, 1050 E. 21st Street, Ogden, Utah and again prior to the funeral from 9:45-10:45. Funeral services will be held on Thursday February 21, 2019 at 11:00 am.
