Robert Bruce Mortell October 30, 1935 – January 04, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Robert Bruce Mortell, 83, of Charlottesville, Va. , and St. Petersburg, Fla. , passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019.

Born October 30, 1935, in Brooklyn, New York, he was the son of the late Thomas and Ida Bayer Mortell. He was a graduate of the University of Virginia, where he played basketball, and still holds the rebound record for the Cavaliers. He was the founder and owner of Eastern Drillers Manufacturing Company.

He is survived by his wife, Caroline M. Mortell; step-children, Deborah Walter, and Brian Michael York; cousin, Victor Baum; niece and nephew Margaret Joan Griesing, and Bennett Bayer Mortell; four grandchildren; and one great grandchild. A memorial visitation will be held from 10 am to 12 pm Wednesday, January 9, 2019 at Hill & Wood Funeral Home in Charlottesville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Charlottesville Albemarle SPCA, P.O. Box 7047, Charlottesville, VA 22906.
