Obituary for Robert L. Shelton Robert “Bob” L. Shelton, loving husband and father, passed away Tuesday November 6, 2018, at age 84. It is rumored he soon thereafter handed St. Peter a list of recommendations for improving the transit for newly arrived Souls, along with a rezoning to sanction erection of a forty-foot radio tower just beyond the Pearly Gates. Born in East St. Louis, IL to Leo and Faye Shelton during the summer of 1934, Robert moved with his mother to Danville, IN in 1940, after his father’s premature death.

As a student at Danville Community School, Robert hoped to become an engineer, as was his father. However, with little money for college, Robert was encouraged by a math teacher, Bill Kirtley, to apply for a scholarship at General Motors Institute (GMI) in Flint, Michigan. Although more than one hundred students took the entrance exam, Bob was one of only thirteen to be granted a scholarship.

He graduated with a mechanical Engineering degree from GMI in 1956. Robert’s engineering career led him to several jobs across the Midwest, including stints with Allison Transmission (Indianapolis, IN), Hesston Corporation (Hesston, KS), and Cincinnati, Inc. (Harrison, OH). He returned to Indiana in 1975 to begin work for Anderson Tool & Engineering, Inc. Starting as a general manager, he eventually became the company’s president, before retiring in 2000.

In 1957, Robert married Amy, his wife of 61 years. Although they knew each other in high school, they did not start dating until both were in college; he at GMI and she at Milligan College in Tennessee. Robert was a longtime member of Bethany Christian Church, serving for a period as the church Treasurer.

An amateur radio enthusiast, Robert and his distinctive call sign, K9IND, were well known to area radio club members. Robert was preceded in death by his Father, Leo; and his mother, Faye. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Amy; sons, Jeff (Jeannine) and Gary (Melissa); brothers, Roger Cain and Ray Shelton; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
