Obituary for Roy “Monroe” Moore Roy “Monroe” Moore, was born on December 13, 1925 in Willowbrook, California to Jesse Monroe and Julia Vera (Garrison) Moore and passed from this life on Saturday, July 14, 2018. Monroe spent his early years in Taft, California, and subsequently moved with his family to Gore/Braggs, OK area in 1932 where he attended Oak Grove and Gore Schools. Monroe worked on ranches and rode horses all his life.

He joined and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Monroe married the love of his life, his high school sweetheart, Helen Dean Johnston, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. They celebrated almost 69 years of marriage until her passing in 2014.

They were blessed with five children of whom he was very proud and loved very much. Monroe was a selfless provider for his family. He was a true cowboy who worked on several ranches including the Tejon Ranch in California, the Anchor D Ranch in Guymon, Oklahoma, and the 600,000 acre Vermejo Park Ranch in New Mexico.

He moved back to Oklahoma in 1949 and helped build the Tenkiller Dam and Powerhouse. He also worked as a Forest Ranger in northeast Oklahoma. Monroe went to work for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and after 30 years of service retired on September 1, 1986.

He was involved in the Lion’s Club as well as the Scissortail Art Club at the Fin & Feather Resort and was an active member of the Gore United Methodist Church. Monroe Moore was an artist who depicted his life experiences using drawing, painting and sculpting as his mediums. Because of his experience as a working cowboy, he had a deep passion for western art.

He is preceded in death by his wife Helen (Johnston) Moore; parents, Jesse and Julia Moore; brothers, Charles Moore and Sammy Moore; sister, Pauline (Moore) (Overturf) Shivers; and granddaughter, Shelbi Nikole (Williams) Baker. He is survived by his brother, George Moore of Cushing and Leonard “Buster” Moore of Ft. Gibson; son, Roy Monroe Moore, Jr. and wife, Patrycia, of Muskogee; daughter, Paula Kathleen (Moore) Thouvenel and husband, Marvin, of Sallisaw; son, Sammy Joe Moore and wife, Pauline, of Skiatook; daughter, Barbara Ann (Moore) DiCrisantis and husband, Jack, of Oklahoma City; and son, Tony Lee Moore and wife, Jan, of Tulsa; grandchildren, Roy Monroe Moore III (Trey) and wife, Linda, of Newburgh, IN; Traci Lynn (Moore) Greer and husband, Kenny, of Muskogee; Bryan Thouvenel of Gore; Paige (Thouvenel) Tolbert and husband, Trent, of Ft.

Gibson; Travis Moore and wife, Char-Leigh, of Broken Arrow; Malea (Moore) Gordon and husband, Don, of Tulsa; Matthew Moore and wife, Brandi, of Owasso; Brent Moore of Jacksonville, FL; Melanie (Williams) Robbins and husband, Brandt, of Oklahoma City; Jill (Williams) Jones-Parra and husband, Hermes, of Tulsa; great-grandchildren, Tyler, Rachel, Alex, Jack, Sally, Bryson, Nash, Nicolas, Jeremiah, Annie, Luke, Ava, Annistyn, Ledger, Tyler, Xander, and Ronan; sister-in-law, Barbara (Johnston) Warren of Tulsa; and numerous other members of the family. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Dogwood Creek Retirement Center, Eastgate Nursing Home, The Springs Assisted Living Facility, and St Francis Hospital of Muskogee for their loving care of Monroe.
