Sara was predeceased by her parents Lida Jane (Snodgrass) and Robyn Dewey (Hazard, Jones) Merriam, daughter Vivian Steel, and sister Elizabeth Chapman. Sara worked as an RN at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital initially in the Burn Unit and then in Labor and Delivery assisting in normal and cesarean deliveries of an estimated 3,000 infants before retiring in 1998.
She loved the work of nursing, first as a hospital aid and a doctor’s office assistant before graduating from Northville High School in 1950. She attended Wayne University and Grace Hospital in Detroit, followed by work as a surgical circulating nurse in KY and as a Labor and Delivery LPN in Ohio before returning to school at age 45 to receive her RN from Schoolcraft Community College. Sally loved children and science, especially nature.
She taught her children how to learn beauty in the outdoors, easily identifying rocks and minerals, trees and plants, and song birds. She was an avid reader, loved animals, and enjoyed lessons in French and classical guitar. Her quick wit and easy laugh always put others at ease, and she enjoyed sharing humorous comic strips.
While raising her six children, she also lived in Detroit, Plymouth, and Birmingham, MI and Middletown, Franklin, and Chesterland, OH. Sally was a member of Saline TOPS and played cornet in the Saline New Horizons Band. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Cleon Newton, and children Marilynn Rice, Toledo, OH; Beverly (Wayne) Penkalski; Katherine (Ried) Jacobsen, Downers Grove, IL; Ronald (Kareen) Newton Key West, FL; and Leila Newton, Jerome, MI.
