Shirley June Whitaker, born June 17, 1942, our precious Junie went home to be with her Lord May 18, 2019. Shirley June was a graduate of Whitesburg High School and Eastern Kentucky University with BA and MA degrees in education. Her life was dedicated to the children of her Kentucky mountains where Shirley June taught English and French for more than twenty-five years in Letcher and Perry counties.

Junie was an active and dedicated member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and an officer in that organization and enjoyed greatly traveling to their conventions and meeting. She also enjoyed her activities with the Red Hat Society. She was an avid reader, and a great seamstress, making everything from pillows to hats.

She loved our family reunions and traveling to be with family any time she could. Much of her life after retirement was given to an exhaustive study of genealogy of the Whitaker and Caudill families. As parents, aunts, and uncles passed on, she became the keeper of our family stories, and we could count on her to fill in the gaps we had long forgotten.

Junie committed her life to the Lordship of Jesus Christ at a young age and was a faithful member of Blair Branch Old Regular Baptist Church. The true love and joy of Shirley June’s life was her nieces and their precious families, Kim and Bob Haas and their children Jacob and Sarah, Tammy and Andy Zappin and their daughter Madison, Ida and Doug Sellars and their daughters Paige and Lily. She is survived by these and her brother Jimmy Neldon Whitaker and sister-in-law Linda Whitaker.

Junie was preceded in death by her mother and dad, Uncle Neldon Whitaker and Aunt Tiny Caudill Whitaker. Junie, we do miss you and anticipate with great joy our next family reunion. Funeral: 12:00 O’clock Noon Sunday, May 26, 2019 at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel with Danny Dixon and Elwood Cornett officiating.

Visitation: 10:00 A.M. Sunday at the Letcher Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Whitaker Cemetery at Roxana, Kentucky.
