Obituary for Thelma Lyons Thelma Joyce Charles Lyons was born June 18, 1943 to App and Mary Charles in Zions Hill, Tennessee. She was their fourth and youngest child. Thelma attended elementary school at Price Public School in Rogersville, Tennessee.

She graduated from Swift Memorial High School in Rogersville. She furthered her education at Morristown College and graduated from Livingston College in Salisbury, North Carolina. After graduation, she drove a small school bus and taught reading to children on the reading lab bus.

Later she worked for the agriculture department in Hawkins County. She also became a social worker placing children in better environments throughout different counties in Tennessee. In her later years of working, her love for fashion and clothes lead her to work for Hamrick’s and J.C. Penney’s in Kingsport, TN.

Thelma accepted Christ as her personal savior and quickly became busy about her Father’s work in the church. She was a faithful member of Lyons Chapel AME Zion Church of Church Hill, TN for 22 years. She worked on many fundraising projects and with children in the Buds of Promise.

She currently has been a member of Bethel AME Zion Church of Kingsport, TN for more than 30 years. She has held countless positions and offices in the AME faith. She enjoyed listening to gospel music, singing, playing the organ or piano and teaching others about the Zion faith.

She was married to William “Billy” Lyons Jr. To this union two children were born: William “Beaver” and Tamishia. Thelma entered her eternal rest on Wednesday, October 10, 2018. She leaves to cherish her memories and mourn her passing two loving and devoted children, William “Beaver” (Patsy) Lyons of Alpharetta, GA and Tamishia (Corey) Lindsey of Phenix City, AL.

; four grandchildren, Laila and Lauren Lindsey, Phenix City, AL. ; Corey (Allison) Copas, Kingsport, TN and Paige Copas, Alpharetta, GA; three great grandchildren, McKenzee and Daylyn Copas, Kingsport, TN, Ava Copas, Alpharetta, GA; two sisters, Jessie Price, Rogersville, TN and Roberta Butler (Leroy ‘Doc’), Silver Spring, Maryland; one sister-in-law, Patricia Charles, wife of her brother A.D. (deceased), Rogersville, TN; one special niece and nephew, Renee’ Charles Leeper and App “Chuck” Charles III, Rogersville, TN and one aunt, Bessie Fulkerson, Rogersville, TN. In addition, she is survived by a vast number of other relatives and friends.

She will be missed but we are secure in the knowledge that she now rests in the bosom of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm Friday, October 19, 2018, at Christian-Sells Funeral Home in Rogersville. Funeral services will follow at 2:30 pm.
