HOUGHTON, Theresa Judith. Known to many as “Tree”, 87, formerly of Cresaptown, MD and Mansfield Center, CT, died at her daughter’s home in Myrtle Beach, SC on Friday morning, February 22, 2019. She was born Theresa Gambino on June 6, 1931 in Iselin, NJ, the seventh child and first daughter of Harry and Emily (Saputo) Gambino.

She graduated from Windham High School in 1949 and from Willimantic State Teachers College in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science. After three years teaching first grade at Storrs Grammar School she joined the Department of Defense in 1956, traveling to Yokohama, Japan to teach for nine years at the Richard E. Byrd School as military civilian personnel. She married Charles Paul Houghton (aka Tatsuo Saito) on June 7, 1958 in Yokohama and started a family, living on the bluff overlooking the bay.

They were married for 23 years and had nine children. A devout Catholic and life-long learner, she loved to read, write, and valued the simplicity of nature. Theresa is survived by, six of her children, twenty-two grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, one of her two sisters, two of her seven brothers, numerous nieces and nephews, her former husband, and many friends around the world.

All will miss her generosity, kindness, unconditional love, and grace. A memorial mass beginning at 11:00 a.m., followed by internment, will be held on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at St. Philip the Apostle Church, 64 Pompey Hollow Road, Ashford, CT.
