Obituary for Vera Loftin Claybrook Mrs. Vera Loftin Claybrook of Ayden, died peacefully at her home on February 16, at the age of 93. Vera was preceded in death by her parents, Walter Zebulon Loftin and Clyde Stocks Loftin; and her husband of 59 years, Jesse Marion Claybrook. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Loftin, Elmer Loftin and Walter Z. Loftin Jr., as well as one sister, Inez L. Pippin.

Mrs. Claybrook graduated from Atlantic Christian College, and she went on to do graduate work at East Carolina University. She taught 41 years in the public school system. Most of those years were spent at Ayden High School, and later at Ayden-Grifton High School.

Vera was selected as Pitt County Teacher of the Year for 1980-81. In 2005, she was inducted into the East Carolina University Alumni Hall of Fame. During her teaching career, Mrs. Claybrook taught middle grades as well as high school.

Some of her duties included serving as student activities director, disciplinarian coach, Literary Magazine advisor, English Department chair, and graduation director. Vera was an active member of First Baptist Church in Ayden, until her health declined. She taught Sunday School and participated in various other activities.

She was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She selflessly served as a loving caregiver to elders in her family. Vera is survived by her son, Walter Marion Claybrook and wife, Susan of Ayden; her daughter, Cheryl Moore and husband, Ben of Ayden; grandchildren, Scott Claybrook and wife, Janice of Advance, NC, Chris Claybrook and wife, Andrea, of Virginia Beach, VA, and Jennifer West and husband, Chris of Greenville.

Mrs. Claybrook has seven great grandchildren; Andrew, Katherine Susan, Garett, Lily Kate, and Wyatt Claybrook; and Spencer and Macy West. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 25, at 2:00p.m. at Ayden Christian Church. The family will receive friends in Beland Hall immediately following the service.
