Obituary for Vernon A. Crawford, Jr. Vernon A. Crawford, Jr., 70, passed away on November 21, 2018, in Marietta, Georgia surrounded by family. He was born on November 28, 1947 in Newton, North Carolina to the late Vernon Crawford, Sr. and Louise Campbell Crawford. Vernon grew up in Newton, North Carolina.
He graduated from Newton-Conover High School in 1966. After high school he graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina with a Bachelors of Education. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served in Vietnam before being honorably discharged.
Vernon began teaching business and coaching football in Wilmington, North Carolina and continued both in Enka, North Carolina. He went to work for Meredith/Burda in Newton, North Carolina where he became a journeyman rotogravure engraver and later lived in Casa Grande, Arizona. He worked for R. R. Donnelly in Des Moines, Iowa and came to Georgia to work for Treasure Chest Advertising as a corporate trainer.
He retired as a trainer at the Railroad Education Institute in Atlanta for CSX Transportation in 2014. Vernon married Cynthia Walker Crawford in 1971 in Hickory, North Carolina. They were happily married for 47 years.
He was a member of Macland Baptist Church, was a Freemason, and Shriner. Vernon loved deer hunting with his boys. He also enjoyed fishing and football.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Cynthia of Powder Springs, Georgia; sons, Spencer Carl Crawford of Carrollton, Georgia, Matthew Stephen Crawford of Powder Springs, Georgia, and Phillip Walker Crawford (Crystal) of Powder Springs, Georgia; sister Debbie Ramseur (Dale) of Conover, North Carolina; brother John Crawford (Kathy) of Blowing Rock, North Carolina; his grandchildren: Christopher, Jacob, Sarah, McKenzie, Cameron, Dylan, Andrew, and Owen; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Powder Springs, Georgia at 2:00 PM. A visitation will be held at the funeral home from 12 noon to 2:00 PM where the family will be greeting friends and relatives.
A burial will follow at a later date at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial donations be made to the American Legion, Post 294: 3282 Florence Road, Powder Springs, Georgia 30127, scholarship fund. Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home & Crematory Macland Chapel, in Powder Springs will be handling the arrangements.
