Virgil Jennings’ Obituary Virgil Jennings Whitmer, 94, passed away January 19, 2019 at Bridgewater Home. Mr. Whitmer was born on September 6, 1924, in West Virginia and was the son of the late William Casper and Josephine Sager Whitmer. He served in the United States Army in both World War II and Korea, receiving three bronze stars in each war.

He worked for the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries as a game warden until his retirement in 1986 retiring as a captain. He was the youngest to ever be promoted that position. He was a member of the Car Club, the Singers Glen Ruritan Club and the Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church.

On September 14, 1946, he married Miriam Dove Whitmer who preceded him in death on August 22, 2000. He was also preceded in death by his second wife, Dorothy Gladwell Whitmer on June 11, 2018. He is survived by two sons, Steve Whitmer and wife Sandy, Harrisonburg; Jerry Whitmer, Linville; three grandchildren, Stephanie Whitmer, John Whitmer and wife Monica, Chris Whitmer and wife Hayley and one great grandchild, Zayda Whitmer.

He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Ivan Whitmer, Beulah Halterman, Wilma Whetzel, and Garland Whitmer. All services will be private, however, friends may sign the register book at the funeral home on Monday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. The casket will remain closed. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Donovan Memorial United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 3, Singers Glen, Virginia 22850.
