Obituary of Wallace Garner Wallace Worth Garner, 92, passed away on the afternoon of April 9, 2018 at Hospice House in Asheboro. He was born in Mechanic, NC on July 22, 1925, the 6th child of Worth and Mary Garner; he was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and wife of 65 years – Ersal Adams Garner. Wallace is survived by his son, Andy Garner (wife Tammy) of Farmer, and 2 daughters – Cindy Hatley (husband Worth) of Trinity and Ginger Clasby (husband Tom) of Seal Beach, CA; 5 grandchildren – Ross Garner (wife Mindy) of Raleigh, Rachel Garner of Los Angeles, Branson Hatley (wife Kate) of Durham, Adair Moorefield (husband Johnny) of Trinity, and TJ Clasby of Seal Beach; and 4 great grandchildren – Georgia and Sylvia Moorefield of Trinity, Warren Garner of Raleigh, and Jack Diamond Hatley of Durham.

Wallace was a veteran of WWII, serving in the US Army from 1944 – 1947; he was stationed in India. He was man of great initiative and entrepreneurship. After working at Randolph Farm Equipment, he sawmilled, then became owner/operator of the Farmer Store.

He later established and ran Garner Seed Company. He was one of the first directors of Randolph Telephone Corporation and a founding director of Randolph Bank. He also served as a Randolph County Commissioner and was on the Board of Trustees of Randolph Technical Institute.

He was an active member of Farmer United Methodist Church until illness precluded continued participation. A man who enjoyed stories of the past, he also looked squarely toward the future and loved discussing new ideas and opportunities. Wallace was an early believer in environmental sustainability, technological advances in communications, and the importance of expanding women’s participation in professional capacities.

He was a devoted husband and a loving and supportive father, grandfather and great grandfather. He served as a role model for his family and his community, demonstrating extraordinary determination and perseverance, gratitude, and tolerance. The family wishes to thank the group of dedicated caretakers – Betty, Ann, Vivian, Adriana and Haleigh, who helped him remain at home as his health declined, and the team at Hospice House for his care during his final days.

We also are grateful to Harold Cagle and Steve Bingham who provided a sweet serenade of country/gospel standards for him in the hours prior to his passing. The funeral service will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, April 14, 2018 at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel, 437 Sunset Ave. , Asheboro, followed by interment at Farmer Methodist Church Cemetery.

Visitation, also at Pugh’s, will immediately precede the funeral from 1:00 – 3:00 pm.
