William’s Obituary WILLIAM M. TURLEY, SR. , 86, of Uncasville, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Sunday, January 20, 2019 at Bride Brook Rehab Center in Niantic. Bill was born in New London on November 4, 1932 the son of James F. and Ethel Abel Turley.

He was predeceased by his wife of 40 years, Lorraine Goodyear Turley. She passed on October 5, 2017. Together they enjoyed weekends spent visiting yard sales and frequenting restaurants in southeastern Connecticut, always finishing a meal with a hot cup of coffee.

He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, honorably discharged in 1964 after 11 years of service. Bill’s of greatest pride and joy was his work and dedication to his career with the City of New London and New London Board of Education. He was a custodian, courier and jack-of-all-trades.

His co-workers and supervisors often said “give it to Billy, he can get it done”. He was most proud of having never taken a single sick day in all those 40+ years, and loved being referred to as the unofficial “Mr. New London”. After retirement, Bill enjoyed his work as a courier for Byles Memorial Home.

His family is most appreciative and thankful beyond words for the friendship, comradery and generosity of the Byles family and staff during this last year. Grampa Bill will be remembered by his grandchildren by his signature greeting, “Hellooo sweetheart”. He loved them all and tried his hardest to always have a gift ready for them.

Being an avid Red Sox and Giants fan, his children will miss the many spirited banter filled debates with their father. He is survived by his 5 sons, William Jr. (Mary), Wayne (Liz), Kevin (Ada), Keith (Merrielee) and Brian (Susan) Turley, his daughter, Sheila (John), five step children, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sisters Jane and Dorothy.

Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 7pm at Byles Memorial Home, 99 Huntington St. New London. Interment will be private. Donations in his memory may be directed to the CT Humane Society, 169 Old Colchester Rd.

Quaker Hill, CT 06375 or the Gemma Moran Food Bank, 374 Broad St. New London, CT 06320.
