Obituary of William Hastings William Joseph Hastings, 80 of Pittsville, passed away on Friday, December 14, 2018 peacefully at Salisbury Rehab and Nursing Center. Born on January 26, 1938 in Salisbury, MD, he was the son of the late Newton E. Hastings, and Iris H North Hastings Ward. For 30 years, Bill (AKA Sonny in his younger years) worked at A&P/Super Fresh Stores where he was Produce Manager and trained newly hired produce managers from all over the Eastern Shore.
During that time he also used to wholesale and retail Christmas trees as well as owning a standardbred horse and part owner of a thoroughbred horse. Along with his wife, Shirley, he established Survival Products, which is now a part of Ace Hardware, and started several other businesses. For 23 years he and Shirley owned and operated Rose Point Farm which in 1991 was the first farm certified organic by the Maryland Dept.
of Agriculture and which also included conventional poultry production. Love for and faith in God as well as love for his family was central to Bill’s life. He enjoyed driving his truck, travelling, reading, singing, dancing, feeding the wild birds at his bird feeders, cheering for the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles but especially playing Pickleball and working out at the YMCA as well as bringing a smile to anyone he met.
Surviving him are his devoted wife of 44 years, Shirley, seven children, William Hastings II, Teresa Johnstone (Rick), Patte Dryden, Angel Terol (Luis), Josephus Hastings (Janet), Joshua Hastings (Alyssa) and Stephanie McCoy (Jason), fourteen grandchildren, Bradley Dryden, Henry Hastings (Fanty), Jessica Urbanke (Sean), Caitlyn Johnstone, Chelsea Kelly (Kevin), Ian Johnstone (Kathryn), Diego and Javier Terol, June, Elsie and Benjamin Hastings and Noah, Owen and Addilyn McCoy, eight great-grandchildren, his first wife, Mary Frances Whitelock, sister-in-law Linda Gillis, brother-in-law George Gillis III (Sandy) and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his sister, Carolee Butler and her husband Kenneth. A visitation will be held on Friday, December 21, 2018 at 6-8 pm at Holloway Funeral Home, Salisbury.
The funeral service will be held Saturday December 22, 2018 at 11 am with visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Dr. James Penuel will officiate. Memorial contributions in Bill’s honor may be made to Queen Nerd Fund, 1324 Belmont Ave.
