Alan’s Obituary Alan Hawkins, 59, of Charleston, passed away, Thursday, January 24, 2019 at Cleveland Clinic Medical Center. Alan was born September 22, 1959 at Thomas Hospital in South Charleston to the late Bernard and Corintha Hawkins. He graduated from South Charleston High School.
At which time, he received a basketball scholarship to California University of PA. As a student athlete, he worked towards his B.S. Degree in Industrial Technology Management. During his senior year in college, he was accepted as an intern for West Penn Power (WPP) in 1982.
Shortly thereafter, the company offered Alan a full-time position as an electrical lineman due to his knowledge, professional skills, and work ethic. As Alan continued to further develop professionally, promotions and opportunities were endless for a black male with his skills, abilities and knowledge in the electrical field. He remained employed with WPP for over 17 years.
Alan resided in California, PA with his family. He raised his three children; Ashley, Anthony, and Alexis until they all relocated to Harrisburg, PA. It was there where he found his passion again for basketball.
Alan was hired and joined the high school staff in Middletown, PA as the head coach for the girls’ basketball team. He won countless basketball games and championships, as well as the love of the community. In the early 2000’s, he relocated his family to Raleigh, NC, where he was hired and joined Wake Electric as their senior lineman.
It was during that time that Alan had the opportunity to start traveling the country assisting other power companies during severe weather conditions. Not only was Alan well known amongst his fellow union colleagues from the IBEW Electricians Local Union Hall, for years – he became the “Go To Guy” to call when an active storm hit anywhere in the country. He would always be eagerly waiting for the call to help those in need.
Being a “Storm Chaser” was his passion and he did it with pride. Alan was a man who stayed in-touch during his travels. He loved being around his family and friends, and no matter where he settled – you were definitely getting a call and/or visit.
His outgoing personality made it easy for him to become friends with whomever he came across. He was always up to date with current events and popular topics including sports, politics, and entertainment. His smile was contagious and he always knew how to brighten your day with a good joke.
Alan’s spiritual walk started many years ago but he rededicated his life to the Lord before he was called Home. Alan loved his three children and grandson. No matter where he was working – he would always be right there whenever they needed him.
He spent the last few years in Greensburg, PA with his youngest daughter, helping to raise his grandson Ryan. Alan was preceded in death by his mother and father, Bernard and Corintha Hawkins as well as his sister Cynthia Petties. He leaves to mourn three children, Ashley, Anthony, and Alexis Hawkins; one grandchild, Ryan Davis; sisters, Agathia Chester and Alvita Hawkins; a special sister Trula Wilson; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
