Barbara Jean Ellis Newman, 77, of Hurricane, WV stepped from this life into Heaven on Wednesday January 16, 2019. Born April 9, 1941, in Bruno, WV, she lived a life of service to the Lord, her family, and friends. She gave her all in every task and loved her family unfailingly.

Her greatest earthly joys were family and friends. She was a wonderful cook and baker; and each year Christmas treats were lovingly prepared and distributed. She loved their Moss Creek community, who were more like family than neighbors.

Mom loved her role of housewife and her garden and flowers. On two occasions when working outside the home, she served at Diehl’s Restaurant of Nitro and the Crown and Shield in Cross Lanes. Her coworkers were like family.

She was the daughter of the late Harmon Ellis and Demintie Christian Ellis of Logan, WV, and step-mother Janice Ellis. Surviving are Freddie J Newman, beloved husband of 61 years; Scott and Rhonda Groves, son-in-law and daughter of South Carolina; grandson Collin and granddaughter Cara, both of South Carolina. Also, surviving are her brothers Jack Ellis of OH, Danny Ellis of OH, Larry Ellis of FL, Harold Ellis of Bruno, WV, Harmon Ellis Jr. of Chapmanville, WV; and sisters Kaye Roberts of Chapmanville, WV; Sharon Hatfield of Chapmanville, WV; and Wanda Sites of Petersburg, WV.

She was predeceased by brothers Kadger Ellis, Charles Ellis, Buddy Ellis, Darrell Ellis, Rick Ellis, Mike Ellis; sisters Shirley Gill, Opal Blankenship, Sandy Bailey. Celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday January 19, 2019 at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane with her nephew, James Ellis officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service, Saturday at the funeral home. Our family cannot adequately express our thanks to Mom’s hospice caregivers —Susie, Sienna, Tiffany, and Brittany, and social worker, Tony. They gave the sweetest of care to Mom and ministered to us as well.
