Bessie Jane (Reed) Simmons, 77, of Easton, passed away Friday, April 27, 2018 at her home. Born November 6, 1940, in Easton, PA, she was a daughter of the late Reverend Walter W. and Frances (Weaver) Reed. Bessie had been employed by Spring Garden Children’s School for five years.

She attended Easton High School. Bessie enjoyed taking care of her family and the neighborhood children, music, dancing and drinking Pepsi. She loved the Jerry Blavat Show and Dark Shadows.

Bessie was a mom to all the friends of her children. She was affectionately called “Betts”. She was always willing to take in everyone in the neighborhood.

The Simmons home was the fun home. Several of the friends always had a home at Bessie’s house when needed. She enjoyed reminiscing about the good times, a lifelong Southside resident, Bessie loved life and loved her children and her good friends, Millie Bowles, Ella Kelly, Liz Thornton and Irene Gilbert.

She was a member of Greater Shiloh Church. Surviving are four daughters, Kimberly Simmons Caleb and her husband Nathaniel, of Coatesville, PA, Robin and Deirdre Simmons and Leah Simmons-Butler, all of Easton; a son, Robert Simmons III, of Easton; three sisters, Wilma Watson and her husband Donald, of Sacramento, CA, Dorothy Wagner, of Philadelphia and Mary Theadford and her husband Milford of Edgewater Park, NJ; seven grandchildren Marcellus Simmons, Charai Simmons Boisselle, Lodshraun Simmons, Marky Holmes, Jr., Maurice Simmons, Cheyenne Butler and Douglas Butler, Jr. and seven great-grandchildren, Ja’Lynn Simmons, Taneshia Simmons, Leilani Boisselle, Nora Simmons, Lod’zae Simmons, Jason Simmons and Shajahan Mack. She was predeceased by her former husband, Robert Simmons, Jr., two brothers, James and Walter Reed; three sisters, Helen and Florence Reed and Frances E. Dorsey and a brother-in-law, William Earl Dorsey, and a nephew, Brian Theadford.

Services will be held at 11am Thursday in Shiloh Chapel, 201 Brother Thomas Bright Avenue, Easton. Call Thursday 9-11am in the church. Burial will be in Hay’s Cemetery.
