Samuel W. Monk, 83, passed away May 29, 2018, at his home in the Hebron community. Monk served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years, retiring in 1986 as a captain after a distinguished final posting as commander of the U.S. Naval Base in Chinhae, South Korea. He served two Vietnam tours, one early in his career as advisor to a South Vietnamese reconnaissance unit, and one later as commanding officer of the U.S.S. Passumpsic, a 644-foot jumbo oiler charged with refueling U.S. ships in the Pacific.

During his career, Monk also served in diplomatic and administrative posts in the Far East. From 1973-76, he was attached to the Military Assistance Advisory Group in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, and in 1979 he arrived in BeiJing, China, for a three-year tour as Naval Attache in the newly opened U.S. Embassy. A highly decorated officer, Monk was the recipient of the Bronze Star with Combat Distinguishing Device; Navy Commendation, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Gold Star, Navy Unit Commendation, Defense Superior Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Vietnamese Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Vietnam Armed Forces Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross), and Legion of Merit.

He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Sue McLemore Monk; son Samuel William Monk Jr. and his wife, Brenda; daughter Suzanne Monk; sisters Naomi “Coot” Burgess and Rachel Caldwell; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Extended family members also include the caregivers of Home Instead. Visitation will be Friday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel.

Funeral services will be Saturday at 2 p.m. at Hebron United Methodist Church with Rev. Zeb Manning officiating. Interment will follow at Hebron Cemetery.
