Hansen, age 91, Hankinson, North Dakota, passed away at St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Memorial service will be Saturday, December 15, at 11:00 a.m. at Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt with Rev. Nancy Quatier officiating.

Music will be provided by organist Lana Sand and vocalists Junelle, Jon, and Dustin Hjelmstad. Burial will be in the St. Nicholas Cemetery, rural Rosholt. Pallbearers will be Carl’s sons-in-law, Orvin Godejohn, Jeff Thune, Jon Hjelmstad, Kyle Kutzer, and Jason Theede, and daughter-in-law, Beverly Hansen.

Visitation will be Saturday morning one hour prior to the service at the church. Carl was born on April 28, 1927, in Wahpeton, North Dakota, to Carl Sr. and Augusta (Pedersen) Hansen. Carl grew up on the family farm near Hankinson.

He attended a one-room school house, Greendale Township #4, grades 1-8. He graduated from the Morris Agriculture High School, Morris, Minnesota. After graduation, he returned home to farm.

Carl married Dorothy Pohl on September 3, 1951, in Rosholt. This union was blessed with six children: Thomas, Janet, Joan, Junelle, Carolyn and Connie. After retiring, Carl and Dorothy moved from the farm to Rosholt in 1999.

Carl was a long-time member of Bethania Lutheran Church in Rosholt. He had a strong civic commitment and was involved in his community. He served as a director on the Rosholt Consumer Co-op Board and the Greendale Township Board for many years.

Carl volunteered as a 4-H leader in Greendale Township for 25 years and was a member of the Rosholt Lion’s Club for 17 years. Carl loved music and shared his vocal talents with Bethania Church through the choir, funerals and weddings. He was an active member of the Alphean Male Chorus in Wahpeton for 25 years.

Survivors include his daughters, Janet (Orvin) Godejohn of Erie, ND, Joan (Jeffrey) Thune of Chanhassen, MN, Junelle (Jon) Hjelmstad of Thompson, ND, Carolyn (Kyle) Kutzer of Fairmount, ND, and Connie (Jason) Theede of Hankinson, ND; daughter-in-law, Beverly Hansen of Eagan, MN; 16 grandchildren, Grant Hansen, Bryant Hansen, Taylor Hansen, Maria Godejohn, Brianna Godejohn, Benjamin Thune, Sarah Theisen, Kailee Adeshina, Dustin Hjelmstad, Brody Hjelmstad, Connor Hjelmstad, Cole Hjelmstad, Lindy Currie, Austin Kutzer, Alyssa Theede and Brock Theede; 8 great-grandchildren; sister, Dorothy Bauer. Carl was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; his son, Thomas; two grandsons, Christopher and Nicholas Thune; parents, Carl Sr. and Augusta; brother, Lorenz; sisters, Luella Hahn, Lavon Luhman and Leona Steele. We remember him as a kind and loving dad, great teacher and storyteller.
