Visitation will be Wednesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the church. Helen Marie was born February 19, 1932, to Willis and Geneva (Sykora) Ziemer at home in Becker Township, Roberts County, SD. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Browns Valley.

She attended grade school at Becker #1 and graduated from Browns Valley High School in 1950. On September 25, 1950, Helen married Raymond Spindler at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church. They started their married life on a farm between Browns Valley and Beardsley.

They worked side by side farming the land and raising cattle, pigs and sheep. In 1951, they moved to a farm south of Beardsley. During this time, their three children were born, Danny Lee in 1953, Bruce Anthony in 1955, and Rosanne Jeanette in 1957.

In 1957, Ray and Helen bought a farm ten miles west of Browns Valley in Roberts County, SD, after a tornado had taken their barn near Beardsley. Helen also was employed as the activity director at the Brown Valley Health Center for 25 years. On May 4, 2009, Helen and Ray moved to Rosholt.

Helen began volunteering at the Rosholt Care Center under the direction of her daughter, Rosanne, the activity coordinator. They called the group “Fun with Helen”. This ended in November of 2016 when the care center closed.

Ray passed away February 27, 2014. Helen was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Beardsley and St. Anthony’s Catholic Church where she served as secretary and as a lector for many years. She was also a Christian Mother’s member; Rosary and Masses will be said in her honor.

After moving to Rosholt, she belonged to St. John’s Catholic Church in Rosholt and served as a lector during the weekly Masses at the Rosholt Care Center. Helen was also active in the Bryant Township Ladies Auxiliary. Helen and Ray always raised a very large vegetable garden.

Helen loved to can, cook, and bake. She would serve a meal or lunch to whoever would come knocking on the door. Many times she would only have minutes to prepare something, but she insisted her guests join the family.

Helen enjoyed doing craft projects and using her computer to Facebook and email. Since moving to Rosholt, she began painting and was proud that she had done something special for each family member and her pallbearers. She loved attending her children’s, grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s school, church, and sports activities and going to the casino where she made many friends.

Rosholt will miss her at community and church events as she tried to attend them all. Survivors include three children, Danny (Joanie) Spindler of Orlando, FL, Bruce (Jill) Spindler of Webster, SD, and Rosanne Sand and friend Greg Mayou of Rosholt; eight grandchildren, Angela (Matt) Harlin, Brian (Christy) Spindler, Mindy (Troy) Timm, Ashley (Travis) Zenk, Blake Spindler, Nicole (Scott) Foltz, Connor (Bretni) Spindler, and Devin Spindler; eleven great-grandchildren, Tyler, Summer, Carson, Madelyn, Jake, Cooper, Nick, Aiden, Olivia, Sterling, and Jaxon; and brother, Harry (Marlys) Ziemer of Browns Valley. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; and parents, Willis and Geneva.
