Doris Avanal (Heidner) Pederson was born on February 1, 1920, to Elmer and Marie (Hoglund) Heidner in rural New Effington. She graduated from New Effington High School in 1938. Doris married Clifford Pederson on November 2, 1941.

The couple began their married life farming near New Effington. They moved into town for a few years while they owned Pederson Grocery and then returned to the farm. Clifford passed away in 1973.

Doris spent four more years on the farm before she moved to a house in New Effington. She later moved to an apartment in New Effington, and to Countryside Inn Assisted Living in Rosholt. She spent the last year and a half at St. Francis Nursing Home in Breckenridge, MN.

Doris worked alongside Clifford on the farm and in the grocery store. She also worked at the bank and as a school cook in New Effington. Doris was always busy and was a great cook.

Her homemade buns and soup were family favorites. The sewing machine was often humming while she made clothes and quilts for church, children, grandchildren, or their dolls. Crocheting and knitting also kept her hands busy making slippers, baby sweaters, afghans, and doilies.

She also enjoyed flower gardening, with a special talent for growing African violets. Doris loved spending time with her grandchildren. When they were younger, they looked forward to their turn to be at Grandma’s house in the summer.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clifford; grandson, Matthew Pederson; and brother, Darrell Heidner; along with brothers and sisters-in-law. Doris is survived by her children: Calvin (Deb) Pederson of Mina, SD, Cleo (Rik) Groves of Rogers, MN, and Diane (Conrad) Stoterau of Eagle Bend, MN; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Ross (Kellee) Pederson, Reese, Gavin, and Jessa; Philip Pederson, Nicholas and Ella; Brandi (Andy) Larkin; Trish Johnson (Nathaniel Smith); Arin (Jared) Spindler and Riley; Sonja Flaagan, Liam and Sofia; Michael Stoterau; Rachel (Dexter) Pomeranz, Alayna and Stella; and step- grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Heather Petri and Noah; Emily Rowley (Chris Davey) and Piper; Sara Groves (Calvin Pham); and Evan Groves.
