Clarence Richard “Dick” Engle June 03, 1928 – January 20, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Clarence Richard “Dick” Engle, 90, of Columbia City died Sunday, January 20, 2019 at North Woods Village, Fort Wayne, where he had been a resident since August. He was born June 3, 1928 in Noble County, Indiana a son of the late Clarence Alfred and Icie Pearl (Flynn) Engle. His formative years were spent in the Wolf Lake area where he graduated from Wolf Lake High School in 1946.

On November 29, 1950 he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served during the Korean War and was honorably discharged from active duty on November 20, 1952. On May 29, 1954, he was united in marriage to Marilyn A. Johnson.

They have always made their home in Columbia City. Marilyn died April 7, 1975. For 46 years, he worked with machine set-up, maintenance, and repair at Dana/Weatherhead Columbia City.

Since 1955, he was a member of the Columbia City Fire Department serving as the Chief from 1975 to 1983. He enjoyed camping and was a member of the former Little Turtle Trail Seekers. His life-long interest in the fire service continued in his retirement years as he loved to work on the Columbia City Fire Departments three vintage fire trucks.

He is survived by his children, Gail Engle, Navarre, FL, Douglas (Audrey) Engle, Columbia City, Victoria (Peter) Sobol, Sugar Hill, GA and Rebecca (Marc) Schuhler, Fort Wayne; seven grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren and a brother, Jack (Mary) Engle, Roanoke. Additionally, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Engle. The funeral service is 10:30 a.m. Friday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City.

Burial is at the Union Twp. Cemetery, Coesse. Visitation is 2 to 4 and 6 to 7:30 Thursday at the funeral home with an Indiana Volunteer Firefighters Association service at 7:30 p.m. Preferred memorials are to the American Cancer Society or Visiting Nurse and Hospice Home.
