Daniel James Mertes, 59, of Naples, FL, passed away on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Formerly of Ransom, IL, he had been a resident of Southwest Florida for the last 35 years. He was born May 7, 1959 in Ransom IL, the son of Wilfred Ronald and Irene L. (née Hrasko) Mertes.

Daniel Mertes graduated from college with an associates degree in culinary arts in Aurora IL and moved to SW FL in 1984. He began his journey as an Executive Chef at Spanish Wells in 1987 and had then moved on to a few of the other country clubs here in the area throughout his residence. Pelican Sound, Pelican Marsh, Stonebridge, and Worthington were a few of them.

He spent his last year cooking in the kitchen at St. Matthews House in Naples. Cooking was his passion, he was known as Chef Dan anywhere he went. Aside from cooking, he enjoyed fishing on the local beaches, and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

He was a very outgoing person and will be missed by many. Mr. Mertes is survived by his loving daughters, Jennie Mertes of Lehigh Acres, FL and Jamie Mertes of Cape Coral, FL; his brother and sister, Timothy Mertes of Goose Creek, SC and Theresa Bates of Aurora, IL; and three cherished grandchildren, Ty Mertes, Elaina Mertes and Meadow Hilsee. A celebration of life will be held at Lovers Key State Park in the Gazebo on the beach on February 24th, 2019 from 12:00pm to 3:00pm.
