Adams November 14, 1938 – January 3, 2019 Darrell Loyd Adams was born on November 14, 1938 to William Floyd Adams and Mary Magdelene Allen Adams. Darrell grew up in Gilbertown on Barrytown Road and attended the Choctaw County schools, graduating from Southern Choctaw High School in 1957. In the fall of 1957, Darrell enrolled at the University of Southern Mississippi and later transferred to Livingston State (now West Alabama) and graduated with a degree in Business Education in 1962.

Darrell’s started his first year of teaching/coaching at Thomasville High School, Thomasville, AL. The summer of that year (1962) Darrell was drafted into the U. S. Army and was stationed at Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. Darrell was discharged in August of 1964 and returned to teaching/coaching at Shaw High School, Mobile, AL.

In June of 1963, Darrell met Dorothy Staples in Savannah, GA. , and they were married December 19, 1964. Soon after Darrell was discharged, he was approached by South-Western Publishing Company, publisher of Business and Economics Textbooks and accepted a sales representative position.

In June 1965, Darrell and Dorothy moved to Birmingham where Darrell started as a sales representative, working, Alabama, Mississippi, Georgia and Florida. Darrell was honored many times during his long career with South-Western Publishing Company, included being named National Sales Representative of the Year, Sales Representative reaching and exceeding sales goals. Darrell was also honored by Livingston University, receiving the “Gold Key Award”.

In July 1968, Michael Darrell Adams was born and two years later in July 1970, Matthew Loyd Adams was born. Darrell, Dorothy and their sons continued to live in Birmingham until 1982, when Darrell accepted a promotion to become National Sales Manage/Vice President Sales and Marketing with South-Western Publishing Company, Cincinnati, OH. In August 1993, Darrell took early retirement and Darrell and Dorothy moved back to Birmingham and Darrell started Adams Learning Res, Inc. A year later, Matt after graduating from Murray State University he returned to Birmingham and joined his dad at Adams Learning Res, Inc. A couple of years later Dorothy joined the company and they became known as “The Adams Family”.

Darrell and Dorothy remodeled Darrell’s homeplace in Gilbertown, AL. , Choctaw County and enjoy going for a week or so each month to their “A Place to Come Home To”. Darrell was preceded in death by his parents Floyd Adams and Magdelene Allen Adams.

Darrell is survived by wife Dorothy Staples Adams of 54 years, and two sons Mike (Kathy) and Matt; three grandchildren, Haley, Laine and Emmett; as well as his sister and brother-in-law Carol Jean Beard and Johnie Beard. Many wonderful friends, family and neighbors. Visitation will be held Saturday, January 5, 2019, from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m., at Asbury United Methodist Church, 6690 Cahaba Valley Road, Birmingham, AL 35242.

Services will be held Monday, January 7, 2019, 10:00-12:00 at Gilbertown Baptist Church, 5559 Barrytown Road, Gilbertown, AL 36908. Private Burial. In lieu of flowers; please make a donation to Barrytown Cemetery in care of: John Henry Abston 1320 Clark Road, Gilbertown, AL 36908.
