David Lynn McNabb passed away in the early morning hours of Monday, June 4, 2018. He was born April 22, 1955 in Torrance, CA to Gerald and Nadine McNabb. David attended elementary school in the Torrance area and then the family moved to Atascadero, CA in 1962 where David attended school and was a star baseball player.

After turning 18, David immediately started working in the oilfields in the Santa Maria Valley.
He worked for Jerry Nunn Construction, Van Construction, Engel & Gray Inc., etc. before starting his own oilfield construction company, ‘David McNabb Construction’ in 1978. At that time David was the youngest General Engineering Contractor in the State of California.
In the mid 1970’s David was also part owner of a sandblasting business in Old Arroyo Grande for a short period of time with his lifelong friend Jack Yant. In the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s David worked primarily for Unocal at the Guadalupe, Orcutt Hill, Santa Maria Valley, Cat Canyon, Lompoc and Pt Conception oilfields and Unocal Pipeline. He also worked for Shell Oil, Grace Petroleum, Chevron, Gato Corporation, Pyramid Oil, etc.
David’s more recent oilfield work was for Santa Maria Energy near Casmalia and the Careaga Lease near Orcutt. He also worked for Chevron at Guadalupe Beach, Avila Beach, Tank Farm in SLO, and did well abandonments in Chevron’s Santa Maria Valley oilfields. David was also a skilled outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman.
He was an avid deer and pig hunter and often went out of state to hunt mule deer and to go trout fishing. He made many fishing trips with friends to Baha California, Mexico. David also loved to cook and was known for his delicious Santa Maria Style BBQ’s.
David was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis in November 2014 and received a bilateral lung transplant at UCLA Medical Center in April 2015. This transplant saved him and added three precious years to his life. However in recent months he was having problems breathing and was diagnosed at UCLA with chronic rejection.
This sadly took his life very quickly. David was loved by practically everyone that knew him. He was a loving father and grandfather and will be dearly missed by all.
David enjoyed attending the ‘New Beginnings’ church in Santa Maria for the last four years with Pastor Larry Tajon. David is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Melanie McNabb, his two sons David and Brian, two daughters Nicole and Carolyn, all of Orcutt and Santa Maria. He is also survived by five grandchildren, Abel McNabb, Shelby McNabb, Hailee McNabb, Cadence Brown and Mason Brown, his sister Sandy (Danny) Tribble of Shawnee, Kansas, his brothers Jerry (Tami) McNabb of Lincoln City, Oregon and Mike McNabb of Santa Maria.
He is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Renee (Steve) Enos, Joshua Tribble, Sheila (Earl) Adels, Michelle (Nate) Basey, Chris (Carly) McNabb, Matthew McNabb, Riley McNabb and sister-in-law Sharon (Steve) Arnold and too many others to mention. David was preceded in death by both of his parents Gerald and Nadine McNabb, his grandparents Virgil and Edith McNabb and Country and Jessie Cook and numerous aunts and uncles and in-laws Wayne and Nettie Libby and Mick and Lenore Bloom, sister-in-law Carol Brookshier. Services will be held on June 16, 2018 at the Gospel Lighthouse Church at 497 Fair Oaks Ave, Arroyo Grande, CA.
Viewing will be at 10:30 A.M. and the service will begin at 11:00 A.M. Everyone is welcome!
