David Martin Murphy April 29, 1946 – May 20, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Memorial Donation David Martin Murphy passed away on May 20, 2019. David was born in 1946, in Richmond to Joseph and Virginia Murphy. He lived in Arlington; Hagerstown, Md.

and Roanoke. David attended Roanoke Catholic High School. He attended The University of Virginia in 1964 and 1965 and from 1969 to 1972 with service in the United States Marine Corps in the interim having enlisted in 1966.

David served as the Ninth Marines Tactical Air Control Petty Chief in 1967 and 1968 in Vietnam. He was awarded a Meritorious Combat promotion to the rank of Sergeant; the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry and The Navy Achievement Medal with Combat V for Meritorious Service and leadership in Vietnam. He was a life member of The University of Virginia Alumni Association, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion, as well as, a member of the Brad Arms Detachment of The Marine Corps League.

Over a period of thirty years, David served on many volunteer boards in Charlottesville, including The Covenant School and the Covenant Booster Club; Madison House at UVA; The Schoolhouse Thrift Shop and the Charlottesville Track Club from which he received the club’s Lifetime Service Award and was a well recognized figure at many local running events, performing finish line logistics and timing. David received a Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce (Accounting) from the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA, and was a CPA in Charlottesville for more than 40 years. He served as a volunteer reader for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic for several years until the local office closed.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Dr. Janet Baker Murphy. He is survived by his daughters, Margaret Barefoot and her husband, Josh and their sons, Baker Barefoot and Carter Barefoot of Richmond and Alina Hamner and her husband, Mitchell of Charlottesville; siblings, Steve Murphy (Monica); John Murphy (Linda) of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. ; and Caroline Campbell (David) of Midlothian.

He is also survived by brothers-in-law Donald Baker (Barbara) and Denton Baker (Laura); as well as extended family of nieces; nephews; grand nieces and nephews, cousins and their families in North Carolina; Virginia; Canada and Luxemburg. David treasured the large family get-togethers, at Sunset Beach, N.C. with as many of the extended family who could attend. Alina and Jorge Hernandez and their family of Miami, Florida were considered as part of the family and any time spent with them was always looked forward to.

A service to celebrate David’s life will be held at Church of Our Saviour in Charlottesville on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 11 a.m. David will be laid to rest beside his late wife, Janet.
