Lillian Coleman Graves April 07, 1924 – May 17, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| Memorial Donation Lillian Coleman Graves, 95, of North Garden, Virginia died on May 17, 2019 at Hospice of the Piedmont. Born April 7, 1924 in North Garden, Virginia, she was the daughter of James Russell Coleman and Dulcie Wyette Jones. She was preceded in death by both parents, by her husband Hunter Lee Graves Sr., by her five brothers and sisters: Samuel Glenmore Coleman, Mary Ellen Coleman, Evelyn Coleman McElhaney, Margaret Katherine Coleman, and Jerry Douglas Coleman.

Lilly, as she was called, was born in the “hollow” on the site of the present-day Walnut Creek Park. She attended Red Hill High School and was the valedictorian of her graduating class. She attended the University of Virginia during World War II as a day student.

Upon graduation, she went on to teach science for more than forty years. While teaching, she earned a Masters Degree from the University of Maryland. She taught multiple grade levels in the District of Columbia, the City of Alexandria, and finally in Albemarle County Public Schools.

She cared about the learning of her students and they adored her. Lillian is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Virginia Graves Melicher and Stephen Melicher; her son and daughter-in-law Hunter L. Graves, Jr. and Allison Graves; and her son Gordon R. Graves, all Virginia residents. She is also survived by her grandsons and granddaughters-in-law, Michael S. Melicher and Melissa L. Melicher of Boston, MA; and William R. Melicher and Darya K. Melicher of Pittsburgh, PA.

She has one great granddaughter, Karina Amelia Melicher, also of Pittsburgh. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank the Oncology Department of Martha Jefferson Hospital, the UVA Home Health nurse who took charge of her home care, and the nurses who gave her special care at the Hospice of the Piedmont.
