Obituary for Dorothy Knight Dorothy Knight, 92, of Chapman, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 13, 2018 at her home. Funeral services will be Friday, April 20, 2018 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Central City with Rev. Bonnie Hendricks and Beth Gregory officiating.
Visitation will be Thursday, April 19, 2018 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Solt-Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Merrick County Foundation c/o Dorothy Knight.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www. soltwagnerfuneral.com. Dorothy was born on January 25, 1926 to Sarah Sylvia and Ray Hughes of Cozad.
She spent many years of her childhood on a farm south of Cozad, NE. Her family moved to Grand Island in 1942, where she attended high school, graduating in 1944. Dorothy later entered St. Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island and graduated with a Registered Nurses degree in June 1947.
She met her future husband at a dance at Saint Francis School of Nursing in Grand Island. After completing Nursing School, she worked in Obstetrics at Saint Francis Hospital. After taking a break from nursing to stay home and raise her children, she continued her nursing career for a Doctor’s clinic, Wedgewood and Tiffany in Grand Island.
Dorothy continued her nursing career serving as a Merrick County Nurse for many, many, years and served as a board member on the Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City. Dorothy married William R. Knight and they had seven children. They were married for 50 years.
Dorothy was dedicated to her family and everyone knew that “Grandma Dorothy’s” was a great place for hugs and homemade cookies. She loved children and loved being a grandma. She was a dedicated nurse, and spent many hours attending to the healthcare needs of many people in her community.
A very important part of her life was her faith and her church family at Chapman Methodist Church and Chapman Baptist Church. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Those left to cherish her memory are her sister, Jewel (Gordon) Deichmann of Central City; her children, Joanne (Mike) Ford of Denver, CO, Judy Knight of Denver, CO, Karen (Lonny) Kutschkau of Central City, Kathy Knight of Denver, CO, Kirby (Debbie) Knight of Grand Island, and Roger Knight of Central City; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.
