Douglas’ Obituary Douglas John Gunnink, 65, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 19, 2019. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Monday, January 28, 2019 at St. Willibrord’s Catholic Church in Gibbon. Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2019 at St. Willibrord’s Catholic Church in Gibbon.

Doug is survived by his wife, Janet Gunnink; mother, Yvonne Gunnink; sons, Zach (Manessa) Gunnink of Gibbon, Andrew (Emily) Gunnink of Cologne; grandchildren, Hariette and Sylvie of Gibbon, Andrew (Emily), and anticipated grandson, of Cologne; sisters, Judy Hible of Princeton, Arlene Gunnink of Bismarck, North Dakota; brothers, Ralph Gunnink of Boyd, Montana, James (Louise) Gunnink of Princeton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, John Gunnink; and brother-in-law, Terry. Douglas (John) Gunnink, 65, died unexpectedly in a farm accident on Saturday, January 17, 2019 at his home in Lafayette.

Doug was born on November 4, 1953 in Milaca, Minnesota to John and Yvonne (Osborn) Gunnink. He grew up in rural Princeton on a purebred Holstein dairy farm. After high school, he attended the University of Minnesota and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture Education.

His teaching experiences began in Albany Area Schools and at Pine City Technical College in Agriculture and Farm Management. He advanced hi skills while working for Rural Ventures, Honeywell Corporation. On October 18, 1984 Doug married Janet Walch, whom he had met while teaching at Albany, Minnesota.

They had two sons, Zachary and Andrew. Leaving their Grasston farm and work at Pine City, they moved to Gaylord, Minnesota to an organic farm to be The University of Minnesota County Extension Agent dairy specialist for Sibley County. From there he joined the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Organic and Sustainable Program.

Most recently he had been an active consultant for organic and sustainable farmers throughout the United States.
