Dr. David Steele DuBose passed away unexpectedly from complications during treatment for Multiple Myeloma on October 6th, 2018, at the age of 72, with his family by his side. He was born to the late M. John and Delia DuBose in Asheville, NC in 1945 and was raised in the Avery’s Creek area of Arden. He spent his boyhood exploring the vast woods, creeks and fields of his family’s homeplace with his beloved dog Pandy and developed a deep love and appreciation for nature.

Later in life he enjoyed telling stories of his many childhood adventures to his sons, grandchildren, and anyone else who would care to listen. All who were fortunate enough to hear his tales loved them. David attended T.C. Roberson High School, where he spent his summers lifeguarding at the Chuck Wagon Pool.

It was there that he met his bride-to-be and wife of 50 years, Sue Ann Jarman. He went on to graduate from Western Carolina University and married the love of his life, Sue Ann, before attending dental school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After earning his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Chapel Hill in 1972, David and Sue Ann settled in McDowell County, NC, where he soon opened his dental practice on South Main Street in Marion.

He practiced dentistry there for over 42 years and loved his patients and staff who loved him as well. David was also a leader in the community and served as president of the Marion chapter of Jaycees, president of the Marion Rotary Club, member of the McDowell County School Board for 22 years, Deacon and Elder of the First Presbyterian Church of Marion, board member of Hospice and an active board member of the McDowell Trails Association. His passions in life were spending time with his family, playing tennis, and exploring nature.

He was kind, generous, and always put the needs of others before his own. He was an independent thinker and not one to follow the flock, unless of course it was the right thing to do. He was an exceptionally hard worker and never failed to accomplish what he put his mind to.

He enjoyed talking with people from all walks of life and was widely regarded for his down-to-earth wisdom and was often sought out for his sage advice. David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue Ann, sons Jason (Amanda) of Hilton Head, SC and Max (Mary Bryce) of Ashburn, VA, and grandchildren Kate, Delia, Laura, and Dalton. He is also survived by siblings Julia Williams, Barron DuBose, and Miriam Lu and was preceded in death by his sister Joan Schelly.

The family will receive friends at Westmoreland Funeral Home in Marion, NC on Thursday, October 11, 2018, from 6-8pm. A church service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Marion at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, October 12, 2018. A private graveside service will be held for family at Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, NC later that afternoon.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the International Myeloma Foundation, 12650 Riverside Dr., Suite 20C, North Hollywood, CA 91607 or the First Presbyterian Church of Marion, 79 Academy St, Marion, NC 28752.
