Dr. G. Louis Battin, 87, of Macomb passed away on Monday, September 10, 2018 at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb. He was born on July 6, 1931 to George and Winnie Gardner Battin. He married Doris Swedell on March 22, 1953 at the Adair Methodist Church in Adair.

Louis graduated from Adair High School. Louis joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He graduated from WIU with a Bachelors and Masters degrees and earned his Doctorate from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Louis taught at Bardolph, Illinois and coached 5th and 6th grade boys basketball prior to being hired by Macomb School District in 1959. He was principal of MacArthur and Wilson schools and later became Assistant Superintendent of Macomb School District until he retired in 1992. In 1993 he was hired by the Regioal Office of Education to work in the Opening Doors Program, and was Director of the Stay-In/Equal Chance Program, and was also Director of the Illinois Truant’s Alternative and Optional Education Program Training and Technical Assistance Project.

He retired from ROE in 2008. Louis also served as Board of Director at Wesley Village from 1988-1993, Emeritus from 1993-1996 and Director from 2000-2011. Louis was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow for dedicated humanitarian services by the Lions Club International Foundation.

In 1991 he was honored with a key to the City of Macomb by the late Mayor Bob Anstine. His family, friends and church were extremely important to him. Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Doris Battin; daughters, Susan (John) Gamage and Ellen (Tim) Pedersen; son, Brian (Viola) Battin and three grandchildren, Jennifer (Mitch) Houch, Eric Gamage and Sarah (Scott) Agee.

Cremation rites have been accorded. Memorial services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church in Macomb at 10 a.m. Saturday, September 15, 2018 with Reverend Dr. Howard White officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 14, 2018 at Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb.

Private burial of ashes will be held at a later date. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to Wesley Village, Streaming Waters or Macomb Education Foundation.
