Edward “Ed” LeVerne Halfacre, Husband, Father, Grandfather, Veteran, Master mechanic and a true Jack of all trades… Recieved his just reward of being acceped into heaven on Oct 16th 2018. Ed was born Sept 10th 1934 in Los Angeles California to Margaret and Eddie Halfacre. Ed quickly became the man of the house due to his father’s early abandonment of his mother and baby sister (Bonnie St John).
Ed did everything he could as a child/young man to provide for his family in various ways from having a paper route to repairing anything electrical or mechanical. It was his love for anything mechanical that led him to be deeply involved in the southern California hot rodding scene. Ed worked for many different companies like Offenhauser… where his expertise in modifying engines for auto racing allowed him to brush shoulders with clebrities like a young Bob Hope, and other legends like pinstripe artist Von Dutch.
Ed’s love for his country led him to serve with distinction in the United States Navy. Ironically he ended up in West Point being next door neighbors for 20+ years to a Col Herrick M Drake who was stationed at the same base 50+ years ago at Naval Air Base, Norman Oklahoma. It was Ed’s use of the GI Bill that allowed him an education from Brigham Young University where he met the love of his life… A beautiful and popular young woman named Tamra “Tammy” Baker… daughter of the famous adventurer, explorer, oceanographer, Captain DeVere Frank Baker of the raft “LEHI”.
Ed knew that he needed to ditch his rebel outsider image in order to become the potential family man that Tammy was looking for… and occasional deckhand for Captain Baker. Ed and Tamra were married and sealed in the LDS Los Angeles temple. And stayed loving and commited through thick and thin for 58 years.
Together they raised 3 children, daughter Kristin, and sons Eric, and Blake… Who’ve provided them with 7 grandchildren who he loved more than anything. Ed was a friend to all… He never turned down someone asking for help… and always gave so much of himself. The reward of knowing he was usefull ment alot to him.
Ed truely tried to avoid the trappings of an over-inflated self image. He was most proud of his time as an EMT/Firefighter and an ambulance driver for the Los Angeles Fire Department because of his natural instinct of keeping a level head in any emergency. He was known for his work ethic and consistent love and support of his family.
Ed will be remembered for his kind eyes and handsome looks. His freinds would agree he had a great sense of humor that endeared him to many. He also had a ruggedness and a lightheartedness that made for a good mix of the actor Sam Elliot and comedian George Carlin.
Ed was an upbeat guy… and would never want anyone to be sad about his passing. He died as a very lively and jovial old timer who would want people to remember him as a devoted family man by being kind to animals and enjoying the beauty of nature. Memorial services will be private and individual, and his cremains will be buried at the side of his son Eric (who passed in1998) and some of his ashes (at his request) will be passed through the carburetor of his AC Shelby Cobra at mid-throttle.
Ed is survived by his wife Tamra, daughter Kristin, son Blake, and his sister Bonnie, and 7 grandkids. Chelsea, Mitchell, Mackenzie, Emma, Bella, Isla and Ava.
