Emelie Mae Conwell, 95, a former resident of the Gales Creek community, longtime resident of the Beaverton community, died peacefully on September 22, 2018 in Tigard, Oregon, two days after she learned of her older sister, Nell Heare’s, 96, passing in Logan, Utah. Emelie was born January 22, 1923 in Vernonia, Oregon, the daughter of the late Walter Edwin Willis and Louise (Jesse) Willis. Her father was a logger.

She was raised alongside her two sisters on a farm in the Gales Creek area. She graduated from Forest Grove High School in 1939 and moved to McMinnville where she worked for Miller’s Mercantile. In 1941, she married Harold Buel and they moved to Bremerton, Washington Navel Base.

In 1943, they had a daughter, Carol Louise (Buel) Stewart. They returned to McMinnville and then they later divorced. Emelie and Carol then moved to Portland where Emelie worked at JC Penney’s and the Portland Development Commission.

In 1975, Emelie married her neighbor Edward Shay Conwell, a teacher at Benson High School. They resided in Portland until 1988, when they moved to Beaverton to be nearer to her mother Louise Willis who was very ill at the time. She also set up a resale shop for RSVP of Washington County.

Emelie enjoyed sewing, helping Ed and his Benson High School students with their building projects and spending time with her grandchildren. She was especially proud of the second hand clothing resale shop she owned for eight years and her volunteer work at the Elsie Stuhr Senior Center in Beaverton. Emelie was preceded in death by both her husband and daughter in 2010, as well as her sisters Evelyn Lewis and Nell Heare.

She is survived by her grandchildren, Brandi Stewart-Wood (Dwight), Todd Stewart (Micah), Tim Smither (Keli) and Holly Graham (Jordan), six great-grandchildren, her nephew Dennis Heare and his family of Logan, Utah, and six great granddogs.
