Obituary for Evelyn Carol Wilson Evelyn C. Hammer Wilson was born 22 September, 1921 to Walter and Helen Hammer of Grandview, Iowa. She was the second of five children. Rosalie, the oldest and Harlan, her younger brother have passed away in recent years, the youngest, Raymond, having passed away at three months of age.
Her youngest sister, Marian, continues to thrive. She was a part of “The Greatest Generation” and strongly embodied the values and beliefs therein, always “walking the talk” throughout her long rich life. She attended a school for nursing, becoming a Registered Nurse (RN) shortly before the outbreak of WWII.
On February 3, 1944, in Portsmouth, Virginia, Evelyn married Robert Darrell Wilson of Letts, Iowa. Darrell joined the Navy, serving aboard an LST ship throughout the war. After the war, and his fortunate return, Evelyn and Darrell settled in Letts, Iowa and began their family with Kathy born in 1947.
Within a few short years they migrated to Colorado and the “magnificent rockies” where deep roots were put down. Two more children were born in Ft. Collins, Sue in 1950 and Steve in 1952.
There are also two grandchildren, Rob and Brooke Wilson, who have been a most special light in her life. Evelyn was completely devoted to her family and her calling as an RN, with enough love and compassion for both to fill an ocean. She lived her life with determination, discipline, dignity and grace.
She raised three children on her own as a proud RN, and provided them with an amazingly clean, healthy, happy and fun home with lots of loving care. She was a wonderful, inspirational and unselfish Mom, Mother-in-law, and Granny. She had a few 4-legged “best friends” along the way too.
You couldn’t have met a more humble person. Her favorite activities were spending time with family – holidays, birthdays and vacations. She loved the Broncos, picnics and hikes in the mountains.
These past almost 12 years she lived in Estes Park, growing all kinds of beautiful flowers, building a sanctuary for song birds (especially blue birds) in her back yard and fending off the elk with a broom stick who dared raid her flowers or feeders. She walked every day – even on the windiest/stormiest of days with her favorite companion, Toby, a much beloved terrier known for his loving disposition and amazing ability to grab and go with ALL manner of food delicacies. Evelyn passed away peacefully on 16 April, 2018 at home surrounded with love and her family.
She will be forever loved and missed beyond measure. In honor of her wishes, a private family celebration of Evelyn’s life will be held at a later date. To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Evelyn Carol Wilson please visit our Sympathy Store.
