Obituary for Garfield Salas Garfield A. Salas November 21, 1944 –October 16, 2018 Garfield Salas enjoyed the ride, and took it to the limit one more time. “Gar the star” was born November 21, 1944 in Pueblo, Colorado to Bennie and Elsie Salas and returned to the heavens on October 16, 2018. He was a lifelong student whose love of knowledge was never satisfied.

He earned his B.S. degree in Behavioral Science, and his M.A. in Vocational Rehabilitation. He worked as a Vocational Rehab Counselor in Colorado, Oregon, Washington and Alaska. In 1982 Garfield returned to Colorado and began his career as a Criminal Investigator for the Colorado State Public Defenders Office.

In 1989 he received the Investigator of the Year Award. In 1994 he was hired as an investigator for the Federal Government and moved to New Mexico. The following year he married Shirley Murdock on the 4th of July, and they shared an amazing journey that lasted 23 years.

Open heart surgery was a bump in the road that caused him to retire early. He was always a dreamer with a plan or a scheme and a twinkle in his eye He loved fishing the lakes of Colorado. He loved to read, especially books about history.

Trips to the NCAA tournaments, and the friends who shared those trips were some of his best memories. He was a betting man who would make a wager just for the fun of possibly getting a free lunch. He always had a story to tell about 1962.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Le Roy Salas. He left behind a lifetime of memories for his wife Shirley, his three children Jill Salas and spouse Nick Maes, Chris Salas and Jonna Lee Salas of Pueblo, Co. and his three children who adopted him, Chris, Angela, and Jennifer Murdock, of Albuquerque N.M. his granddaughter Christy, sister in law Betsey, and his nieces and nephews. The true treasures in his life were the friends he gathered along the way.

He was surrounded by their laughter and love, and we were lucky enough to share his journey, Adios mi amigo; vaya con Dios, until we meet again… A celebration of life will take place on November 12th from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. at St. Genevieve’s Parish Hall, 1025 E.
