Obituary for Marie Lorraine Schulte Marie Lorraine Schulte, 94, passed away on November 2, 2018 at the La Posada Hospice facility. Marie was born April 28, 1924 to Dr. Warren and Mrs. Alma Smith in Mora, New Mexico. Following her high school graduation from Loretto Academy (Santa Fe, New Mexico), Marie was employed as an executive assistant at the Carlsbad, NM potash mines offices.

She married Pierre F. Hartshorne in 1947 and moved to Los Alamos, where her new husband was employed by the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratories. Following his retirement in 1979, Marie and Pierre moved to the Las Cruces, NM area where they enjoyed living in the village of Dona Ana. After Pierre’s passing in 1981, Marie later married John Schulte, also a former Los Alamos scientist.

She and John led an active and peaceful life for many years, as John passed away in 2000. Marie then continued a fruitful experience in Las Cruces, exploring many venues of nature in pursuit of the beautiful and singular birds in New Mexico and throughout the world. This life long avocation was a significant measure of Marie’s impactful contribution to the happiness of friends and colleagues, and of fostering the creation of the Mesilla Valley Audubon Society and an educator’s award, presented annually to a select science teacher in the Las Cruces Public Schools.

Marie’s survivors include three sons and their families, Dr. Michael Hartshorne and his wife Dr. Lida Crooks, of Albuquerque, NM, Joseph Hartshorne and his wife Sonya DeLeon and their sons Sergio and Eustace of Rociada, NM, and Mark Hartshorne and his wife Trina Hartshorne and their daughter Taylor, of Las Cruces, NM. Marie was preceded in death by her first husband, Pierre Hartshorne, and her second husband, John Schulte and her sons Steven Hartshorne and Jeffrey Hartshorne. A private service will be performed with the family in the Pecos Wilderness, a place of scenic beauty long admired by Marie and her friends and relatives.
