Gerald D. Kuehnen, 99, of Hillsboro, IL, passed away on Friday, June 15, 2018, at 8:02 a.m. at Sherman Villa East, Sherman, IL. Private family services will be held at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL. Burial will take place in Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL.

Bruce Holcomb will officiate. Mr. Kuehnen was born on January 23, 1919 in Staunton, IL to the late Charles and Lydia (Weissen) Kuehnen. He was a high school graduate and was a Boatswain’s Mate G, Petty Officer 1st Class, during World War II, and retired from the U.S. Navy.

He was then a U.S. Postal Carrier and retired from that position. Mr. Kuehnen lived in Staunton, IL, Philadelphia, PA, Norfolk, VA, and Hillsboro, IL during his lifetime. He married Betty Jean Nelson on October 7, 1954 at First Presbyterian Church, Hillsboro, IL.

She preceded him in death on April 19, 2010. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association; a member of the National Association of Destroyer Veterans; and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers. Mr. Kuehnen is survived by two brothers-in-law, Guy Nelson of Springfield, IL and Bruce Holcomb of Hillsboro, IL; a niece, Lori Beth Holcomb; four nephews, Greg Holcomb, Jeff Holcomb, Doug Holcomb, and Matt Holcomb; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Memorials may be given to Hillsboro Area Hospital, Hillsboro, IL or to the donor’s choice.
