Born on June 22,1930 in Baltimore, MD, he was the son of the late Frank and Florence (Lamartina) Serio. He was the beloved husband of the late Linda (Metcalf) Serio whom he loved dearly; wonderful father to Michael Serio, Anthony Serio, Joe Serio, John and his wife Barbara Serio, Timothy Serio, Christopher Serio, Theresa Bowen and her husband Wyatt Bowen of Maryland and Mike Wilson and his wife Lori Wilson of West Virginia; a phenomenal Grandfather and role model to 15 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and to many others.
He is also survived by three brothers: Carmelo Serio, Jack Serio of Maryland and Sam Serio of West Virginia, and two sisters, Rose Pohler and Mary Powers of Maryland. Along with his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by a brother, Joseph Serio. Gus was a self- made man.
He did it his way and touched many lives. From early on he was a bundle of energy and a formidable force; his tenacity helped him accomplish many things in his life. Although he had a very limited formal education, it did not stop him from doing the things he wanted to do.
At a young age he joined the Merchant Marines and then the Army. When he came home, he did various jobs to support his family but finally settled on driving a tractor trailer for years. Later he started his own catering business and opened a sub shop in Glen Burnie, MD.
Serving food and helping others was his passion. He was always very active in the community and/ or the church that he belonged to, from coaching Little League, helping with Vacation Bible School, Senior Luncheons and many other various activities. He was an active member of Augusta Church of Christ.
Gus is responsible for the formation of a program called H.A.P in Pasadena Maryland. This program made it possible for handicapped young people to participate in sports which in the late 60s was not typically done. In 1971 he received a commendation by the President of the United States for this humanitarian accomplishment.
Gus was a wonderful example of his faith in Jesus Christ and a life well lived. He leaves us with lasting memories of faith, hope, compassion and love, which is an amazing legacy to those his life has touched. A private memorial will be held at a later date.
