Anna Mae Carpenter January 18, 1932 – February 16, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook| View Guest Book Entries| Send Sympathy Card Anna Mae Carpenter, 87, of Romney, WV passed away on Saturday February 16, 2019 at the home of her caregiver, Wendy Welling, Romney, WV. Anna Mae was born on January 18, 1932 in Lost River, WV, the daughter of the late Ray & Nellie (Brown) Carpenter. Miss Carpenter graduated from Romney High School Class of 1949.

She attended Shepherd University and taught school at Grassy Lick before going to Washington, DC where she began working for National Geographic. From there she worked 30+ years at the Library of Congress until retirement. She was a member of the Mt.

Vernon Methodist Church in Washington, D.C. where she was active in several organizations. She was a devout Christian and loved the Lord and always extended that love through her kind, gentle and generous nature to everyone around her. She had the rare traits of always being polite, cheerful and optimistic.

Her devotion to her family was forever present. She adored her nieces and nephews and they in turn considered her a second mother. Anna Mae had a special love and compassion for animals especially dogs, cats and birds.

She loved flowers and was an avid Washington Redskins, West Virginia Mountaineers and Navy football fan. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved sister and brother in-law, Charles and Charla Shahan. Anna Mae is survived by her sister, Sharon Todd (Larry) and brother, Dwight Carpenter, (Margaret); niece, Kim Thomas and great nieces, Kennedy Todd, and Tilden Carpenter; nephews, Stephen Shahan (Sharon), Troy Todd, Shane Todd (Beth), Paul Carpenter (Gabrielle), Jay Carpenter (Alexis),; great-nephews Jonathan Todd, Lawrence and John Carpenter.

She also leaves behind devoted friends, Jane Quinn, Joan Georges; caregivers, Wendy Welling, Amy Carr and special friend, Kathleen Sweeney. At her request, she will be cremated and a graveside service will be held for the immediate family at a later date. Any expression of condolence can be sent to Hospice of the Panhandle, 330 Hospice Lane, Kearneysville, WV 25430 or St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, St. Jude’s Place Bldg.
